McDonald's originated the Filet-o-Fish sandwich stemming from Ray Kroc’s insistence on carrying a non-meat sandwich to accommodate religious customers who did not eat meat on Friday.
While I cannot vouch for BK, Wendy's does actually carry a fish sandwich. It is 100% Wild-Caught North Pacific Cod, and much like the rest of Wendy's menu, far superior to the Filet-o-Fish. However, Wendy's only carries it seasonally during lent (when it is much more common for people to observe not eating meat on Fridays) or, if there's a market for it, year round. McDonald's has the edge with the Filet-o-Fish only because it's been built as an iconic part of their brand.
I mean, let's be real. Just visually, which one looks better?
