There are not many movies that I can truly enjoy more than once, but there are three writer/directors that can semi-consistantly create movies that have enough depth that I can enjoy their movies again and again.
Let's start with The Coen Brothers:
Blood Simple-
This 1984 movie was Joel Coen's directorial debut and it is a nail biter every single time I watch it. Count the bullets left in the gun as the movie progresses. I don't really understand the final shot; it's one of those ambiguous endings that leaves you wondering if it has some sort of deeper meaning- probably not.
Miller's Crossing-
In my opinion, though the Coen brothers had always been adept in creating depth to their movies, Miller's Crossing was the movie that cemented their reputation as masters of their craft. When you watch this movie, try to be aware of the little ways that they suggest that the universe they create is bigger than what you see on screen. They will subtly suggest back-stories for characters that are literally on screen for only seconds. I could go on and on about the reasons why this movie is amazing on so many levels, but I will refrain.
Burn After Reading-
I have had a lot of people disagree with me on this one. I simply cannot understand how people are able to not LOVE this movie. Every single character in this film is AMAZING. I am blown away at the acting in this movie- all the way down to the most minor characters.
The Coen brothers have a lot of great movies, these are just my three favorites. Let us move on to another great writer director: Wes Anderson:
Rushmore-
In my opinion, this movie comfortably lands in the top ten best movies of all time. All of Wes Anderson's films are sweet and quirky- why does this one eclipse all the rest? I think the answer is probably two words: "Jason Schwartzman". You could probably expand the answer to four words by adding the words "Bill Murray".
The Royal Tenenbaums-
Though the acting is perfectly fine in this movie, it is the screenplay that is the real star of this film. I challenge you to read this script sometime- it is a different experience than watching the film. The film is great, but the script is amazing!
I have one last writer/director to submit: Paul Thomas Anderson:
Of all the filmmakers that I enjoy, Paul Thomas Anderson produces the most diverse films. You really don't know what to expect from him. My absolute favorite from him has got to be...
There Will Be Blood-
Man, is this movie powerful! When I finished watching it, I started it over and watched it again the same night. That's high praise because I have never done that before in the history of my life, and I probably never will again. It is the masterful performances by Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano that really make this movie great. The final scene is the cherry on top and the final words by Lewis really tickle me: "I'm finished!"
