I would imagine you are referring to this text.
John 1:1–5 (KJV) -
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Let’s break this down.
John 1:1–2 (KJV) - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.
Whatever this word was it was in the beginning.
It was also with God.
And it was also God.
How can anything be with something that it already is?
There is only one way I know to make that happen and it can be seen in a healthy marriage.
When a husband and wife have the same mind or character they are one even though they are very much independently themself within that oneness. So who is this Word that was in the beginning one with God?
John 1:14 (KJV) - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Well, whoever it is they are identified as the only begotten of the Father.
John 3:16 (KJV) - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
In fact, they are the only begotten Son.
Matthew 3:16-17 (KJV) -
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Based on this passage and others like it this one and only begotten Son of the Father must be Jesus.
Let’s see what more we can uncover about the Word.
John 1:3 (KJV) - All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
At first glance, this appears to be about “all things” rather than about the only begotten Son of the Father, Jesus Christ.
But if we look deeper we find some clear attributes about Jesus Himself.
Jesus made all things. Universes, galaxies, planets, earth, mountains, valleys, trees, plants, mammals, humans, adam, eve, you & me. In fact, based on the understanding of this verse, Jesus even made Lucifer. However, there was something that Jesus did not make.
Ezekiel 28:15 (KJV) - Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
Iniquity, or as Google identifies it:
- wickedness
- immorality
- evil
- sin
- wrongdoing
- offense
That came forward from the heart of Lucifer himself via his own free-will volition.
Fortunately, there will one day be an utter end made of iniquity.
Nahum 1:9 (KJV) - What do ye imagine against the Lord? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.
But the word used here is “affliction”. Can the two be tied together?
Synonyms for affliction according to Google include:
- disorder
- disease
- illness
- evil
- scourge
- plague
- trouble
Do you see the connection?
It is the word “evil.”
Leads one to ponder on how there can be an eternal burning fiery place of torment called hell if an utter end of evil is made.
But that’s not the topic here today.
What else do we know about the Word?
John 1:4 (KJV) - In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Not only did Jesus create all things but it is because of Jesus that all things have life.
When it comes to the creation of humanity this is an amazing fact to ponder.
Genesis 2:7A (KJV) - And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground…
What do you have?
Dead dirt.
And then?
Genesis 2:7B (KJV) - And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life…
As a result, like any good algebraic equation, you have the outcome.
Genesis 2:7C (KJV) - And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Simply put, because the Father brought forward only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ all things have life including you and me.
In my book that is a fantastically amazing equation.
But it is not the end of understanding the Word from verse 4 because we have not said anything about light.
John 8:12 (KJV) - Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Psalm 119:105 (KJV) - Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
John 9:5 (KJV) - As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
Not only is Jesus the light but we are commissioned based on this knowledge as to what we are to do within ourselves as the result of His light.
Matthew 5:16 (KJV) - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
And as we bring forward His light through our character we can clearly know:
Psalm 119:130 - The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
Imagine, the Word that was with God in heart, mind, and body created all things that He then gave the light of life to, and then this happened.
John 1:5A (KJV) - And the light shineth in darkness…
The darkness refers to the evilness of iniquity that was brought into humanity because of the disobedience that leads to the death of our first parents and as a result you and me.
Romans 5:12 (KJV) - Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Can you imagine the original light Creator choosing to shine in our midst?
How did this happen?
Matthew 2:2 (KJV) - Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Wow.
The Creator of all of everything was born into humanity as a baby.
Amazing.
And then what happened?
Isaiah 53:1 (KJV) - Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
What?
That verse clearly does not fit this equation.
John 1:5B (KJV) - And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Or does it?
Isaiah 53:2-9 (KJV) -
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Most sadly it does.
The Word (aka Jesus) gave up His life that we might live. This is the very life that Jesus Himself freely gave to us.
John 10:17-18 (KJV) - Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
But praise His Father God that the story does not end here.
Imagine spending eternity without the Creator of all of everything?
Without the Word.
But don’t spend too much time in that activity as it is completely unnecessary.
Matthew 28:5-7 (KJV) -
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
He has risen.
He is alive.
And as a result, we have the ability to hold onto a hope that cannot be deferred.
Romans 8:24-25 (KJV) - For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
It is ours as a free gift from The Word.
