Beam is the maximum width of the vessel’s hull. The word beam is also used as the location of the widest part of the boat, as in “whale on the starboard beam”.
You will often see a vessel’s size described by her length, beam, and draft (how deep she sits in the water). Length is usually given as waterline (LWL), on deck, or overall (LOA).
