My friend and I went to a fast food restaurant and it was packed full of people. The only available seats were outdoor seats. So, we both decided that my friend stay at the table while I went to order our meals.
When our meals were ready, my food tray was crazy full and foreseeing that it was going to be difficult to carry, I thought about making two trips to our table. But at the last second, I thought, "I can do this in one trip." So, I positioned my hands on the food tray carefully, making sure I don't spill our drinks. There I was, slowly making my way to the door. I glanced at the handle and saw that it said "Push". "Perfect," I thought, "I can just use my back to push the door open." Since my hands were full.
All of the sudden, this teenager runs from behind me and he extends his arm out in front of me to totally block my path and runs to the door. I was livid! How could this foolish teenager whizz past me and block my way when I was clearly holding a tray full of food?! He could have easily knocked my tray over.
Before I could even furrow my eyebrows to physically express the anger I was feeling internally towards this kid, I realized that he wanted to get to the door before I did so he could keep it open for me. I immediately felt embarrassed for negatively judging him.
As I went out the door with my tray, I thanked him genuinely with a big smile. This young man saw someone who needed some help and without any second thoughts, he rushed to help her.
It's small gestures like this that let us know there is still hope for humankind. And it has definitely taught me that we shouldn't judge people so quickly.
