My son has a genius level IQ. He’s also very much an introvert. From the time he first started school, teachers drew attention to him in front of their classes, which made him extremely uncomfortable; so much that he decided to counteract the attention by turning in assignments late, or simply not turning them in at all. By the time he reached middle school, where he was put into “academically talented” classes, his anxiety level was so high that he simply quit going. He missed at least two years of school, but still graduated from high school on time. He was one credit short to graduate with his class, but he was allowed to take a summer school class in Advanced Calculus that was designed for people who had taken the class before and failed, or who wanted to improve their grade. He passed the class and tutored others, without ever having taken any form of calculus in the past. In spite of his high IQ, he works several minimum wage, part time jobs. In his spare time, he writes code for several video games he has designed himself, and smokes marijuana to keep his anxiety level manageable. He has never felt like he “fits in” with people of average intelligence, although I’ve watched him try to dumb himself down to their level to gain their acceptance. His life has become more isolated and alone with age. Our society has become less tolerant of people who are outside the average range. I’m sure there are many people of high IQ who successfully rise above it, but my son was not able to do that.
