1. Be courteous. You have no bargaining power whatsoever. Your BATNA is, well, nothing. You have no alternative so you can't be demanding. Also, the person who initially answers your call doesn't have the authority to tell you yes. Very nicely ask to speak to the supervisor saying that you just want to double check.

2. Be honest. Tell them honestly why you need the ticket changed. In my case, I told them I misclicked. Dumb reason, right? But it worked because I am on an international flight so I told them I got confused by the time zone difference. When I was asked why it took me a week to call in to request the change, I told them that I only discovered the error at the passport agency today when I was getting my passport rush-processed.
