It's more healthy for your foot to wear sneakers compared to high heels and flip flops for that reason other sandal or dress shoes have no cushion and by the end of the day your feet are killing you and the straps rubbing against your barefoot is not helping matters any. For me comfort is the top reason. My secondary reason is sneakers come in a variety if designs and colors so some can look real cool looking verses just a uniform color of a boot or dress shoe so the looks of the sneakers come 2nd in to play for me. The third reason is sneakers are made to do a variety of activities you can do multiple activities when wearing sneakers verses a different type of shoe you would have to change shoes in order to do more stangous activities. For example if you want run or climb a mountain, you would have to Change out of your high heels and into a pair of sneakers verses if you had sneakers on to begin with then you wouldn't have to change your shoes.

Imagine my surprise when these shoes became a status symbol. The same guys who wore these were wearing vineyard vines shirts and Costa sunglasses. These shoes became part of the basic uniform of snobbery (at least where I'm from).

Now I'm not saying that you are one of these people, but I am saying that this is what the shoe means to me.

As far as style goes penny loafers or drivers come in two different fabrics, leather or suede, and a variety of colors. I think that in a business casual setting these shoes can be maximized to their full potential; but when worn with jeans and a t shirt it just comes across as “I'm too good for a lit of sneakers”

I'm not going to lie, there are some sneakers that are ugly

AHHHHHHHH MY EYES

Anyway, back to the original question, the reason that so many people wear sneakers is because they're comfortable.

Yes I know you directly stated otherwise, so I have legitimately no idea what you have been wearing since loafers are actually just stiff leather with rubber tread on the bottom.

As far as why everyone else wears them? Hard to say: America is an on the go society so maybe we just always want to be ready to move, sneakers and sneaker culture spreads from street style so maybe all these kids in the suburbs are just imitating that, or perhaps it's just that a sneaker is a default shoe that is appropriate for most occasions.

Take a Quick Refresher on the History of Sneaker Culture

The intrigue of sneaker culture lies in the fact that it is both an equalizer and a mark of exclusivity – both egalitarian and elitist. With everyone from rappers and hedge fund managers to athletes and middle schoolers alike finding ways to sport sneakers regularly, the trend has entirely pervaded the fashion world for both utilitarian and aesthetic reasons. But beyond the fashion world, the sports shoe culture has taken on an iconic significance of its own.

Sneakers have become agents of social change. Popularized by their utility in the sports world, they became iconic, larger-than-life, with the emergence of the Hip-Hop scene, with particular fervor in New York. While nearly every sneaker made cool in the 1970’s was worn first on the basketball court, the Hip-Hop scene pushed the industry’s boundaries in terms of material, color, even cut. It made the more adventurous sneaker that much more wearable for the general public. “In the 1970s, New Yorkers in the basketball and hip-hop community changed the perception of sneakers from sports equipment to tools for cultural expression.

In terms of fashion, the sneaker has become a crucial element of masculine expression: in a world that insists on jeans, slacks and button downs as the male uniform, sneakers are an avenue for color, expression, and personal style. Sneakers have allowed more diverse images of male success to be imagined in men’s fashion. When you think about the tech genius or the athlete or the rapper, none of them look like a Wall Street banker. They’re expressing new models of masculine success. The sneaker is central to that. Sneakers allow men to take a much greater risk in their wardrobe, without being chastised for it. In fact, at present, sneakers are available as a viable, appropriate clothing option for a wider demographic of men than ever before, worn with everything from suits to sweatpants.

People find meaning in sneakers, so their choices are driven by brand identity. The original Chuck Taylor All-Stars shoe from Converse is associated with ideas of anti-fashion, alternative culture, authenticity and nostalgia, so those ideas are related to that brand. In contrast, The Air Jordan is very much about the next thing, the newest thing. So you see two different types of sneakers—Air Jordan versus the Converse—conveying completely different values in terms of what the wearer wants to express about themselves.

Ultimately, the sneaker has come to rest as an emblem of both the inclusivity of the fashion world and the social change that has accompanied that shift on an international level.

The sneakers scene has always been here, millennials growing up surrounded by sneakers so they simply wear them because they are so readily available without giving it two thoughts about sneakers' origin.

This question and the previous question you asked me are very similar. If you use Quora to do your research homework, we will be very disappointed.

I once met a man who drove a modest Toyota Corolla, wore beat-up sneakers, and looked like he’d lived the same way for decades. But what really caught my attention was when he casually mentioned he was retired at 45 with more money than he could ever spend. I couldn’t help but ask, “How did you do it?”

He smiled and said, “The secret to saving money is knowing where to look for the waste—and car insurance is one of the easiest places to start.”

He then walked me through a few strategies that I’d never thought of before. Here’s what I learned:

1. Make insurance companies fight for your business

Most people just stick with the same insurer year after year, but that’s what the companies are counting on. This guy used tools like Coverage.com to compare rates every time his policy came up for renewal. It only took him a few minutes, and he said he’d saved hundreds each year by letting insurers compete for his business.

Click here to try Coverage.com and see how much you could save today.

2. Take advantage of safe driver programs

He mentioned that some companies reward good drivers with significant discounts. By signing up for a program that tracked his driving habits for just a month, he qualified for a lower rate. “It’s like a test where you already know the answers,” he joked.

You can find a list of insurance companies offering safe driver discounts here and start saving on your next policy.

3. Bundle your policies

He bundled his auto insurance with his home insurance and saved big. “Most companies will give you a discount if you combine your policies with them. It’s easy money,” he explained. If you haven’t bundled yet, ask your insurer what discounts they offer—or look for new ones that do.

4. Drop coverage you don’t need

He also emphasized reassessing coverage every year. If your car isn’t worth much anymore, it might be time to drop collision or comprehensive coverage. “You shouldn’t be paying more to insure the car than it’s worth,” he said.

5. Look for hidden fees or overpriced add-ons

One of his final tips was to avoid extras like roadside assistance, which can often be purchased elsewhere for less. “It’s those little fees you don’t think about that add up,” he warned.

The Secret? Stop Overpaying

The real “secret” isn’t about cutting corners—it’s about being proactive. Car insurance companies are counting on you to stay complacent, but with tools like Coverage.com and a little effort, you can make sure you’re only paying for what you need—and saving hundreds in the process.

If you’re ready to start saving, take a moment to:

Saving money on auto insurance doesn’t have to be complicated—you just have to know where to look. If you'd like to support my work, feel free to use the links in this post—they help me continue creating valuable content.

Because it's probably the most diverse style-wise footwear you can purchase. Just look at all the different colorways and styles of sneakers ...everything from retro simplicity to futuristic high tech design. And everything in between. There's something for everyone.

You can not only make your "statement" but feel comfortable doing it.

And you don't have to be "young" to wear them. With the resurgence of the retro styles like Converse, PF Flyers, Keds and Vans there's plenty of choice for the young at heart also.

Because they have parents who thunb their noses to a sense of what is proper and decent…a sense of propriety and and thrusting this sense onto theirchildren.

Because our morons in the fashion world claim you can… They look awful and rather unprofessional. But then again, have you walked through a modern office these days? Most companies have relaxed their dress codes to a point that you can’t tell if the staff are there for a sleep over, custodians or are homeless people trying to hold a protest… I work with very large businesses in heavy industry. I wear a business suit, tie, white shirt and button down oxford. In the winter, I wear a wool top coat. Looking professional has helped. I’m taken far more seriously and treated far more professionally.

And when you say “loafers” you realize you have just unspecifically covered a type of shoe with just about the same multi-zillion styles as sneakers. I have seen some loafers that range from true slip on clod-hoppers to shovel-nosed “fence-climber” clown shoes.

So many people wear sneakers for the simple reason they like how they look, they can make a statement and they’re just plain comfortable to wear …or all three reasons.

I have a wide selection of both sneakers and loafers in my closet. My “loafers” happen to be mostly moccasins of differing styles and my sneaks are mostly Vans, All-Stars and Nike Free 5.0’s.

Main reason is I do not like to wear socks and find it more comfortable not wearing any. I also like the feeling of the insoles, (especially the canvas ones) on my bare feet.

I don’t wear sneakers very much honestly.. but most of my footwear i wear without socks!

I HATE socks with a passion! Mostly you will catch me in flip flops. If not, I wear flats and def no socks with those. Same thing when I wear heels, obviously no socks. In the winter usually ugg boots without socks. It’s not often I wear sneakers. I even typically do workouts barefoot.

When I’m home, you are 100% likely to catch me barefoot.

No way! I know people may think it looks cool, but I’m not about to risk blisters and stinky feet just to look good. Plus, you never know when you’re going to be asked to take your shoes off, so it’s better to be prepared.

My advice to anyone considering going sockless is to make sure you wear a pair of shoes that’s a little bit roomy. If your feet are slipping and sliding around, you’re going to end up with some major discomfort. You also want to make sure to wear shoes that are breathable, so your feet don’t get too sweaty.

  • Make sure your shoes are breathable and not too tight

Sneakers are to some people the average Joe Veblen good. Meaning to them they have a negative price elasticity. The behaviour behind a Veblen good is always about status seeking. It beats me why some people do that particularly with consumer goods.

And this is also one of the main reasons why men have grown such an emotional attachment towards shoes.

Most of the men care for their shoes much more than the garments. Whether you accept it or not, there is nothing more precious than an exclusive pair of shoes. And when it comes to exclusivity, it is hard to get one which is more exclusive than sneakers. Numerous exclusive shoes are available from various brands that make sneakers such a lovely piece of wardrobe item among the man.

There is a special pair of shoes in the wardrobe of every man that is close to their heart. And even if a fire broke out, the first things that they will save is the pair of their favorite exclusive sneakers. And this is also one of the main reasons that you will find so many people paying so many extra bucks to own the sample of their favorite pair of exclusive shoe because only a handful of people know about it and you can proudly show off your exclusive sneakers.

Another primary reason why people refer sneakers over all the other varieties of shoes is because of the utmost comfort that they can get while they are wearing UA Sneakers which they won’t get in any other varieties of shoes. Throughout the day, feet are secured shoes; an ineffectively ventilated condition. Cowhide is a breathable material that additionally assimilates stickiness.

Sneakers, trainers, tennis shoes, plimsolls – whatever you call them, athletic shoes have made their mark on the way we live and dress since their invention in the early twentieth century. The sneaker's ascent reflects some of the most significant pop-culture developments of the last few decades -- from the impact of advertising and mass production, to the influence of hip-hop and the NBA.

After the devastation of WWI, governments had to confront more than just the colossal loss of life. The war had demonstrated how physically unprepared their populations were for battle, prompting a large-scale push for fitness.

As people rushed to the gym, opportunistic industrialists started mass-producing sneakers, bringing down prices and democratizing what had once been the domain of the wealthy.

To set themselves apart, the Converse Rubber Shoe Company drafted basketball player Chuck Taylor to improve their basketball shoe -- the All-Star -- in 1921.

By the end of WWII, the sneaker had lost what remained of its Victorian luxury associations. Everyone from school kids to workmen wore them for comfort, not status. But an uptake in conspicuous consumption and personal fitness fads in the 1970's suggested the time was right for a sneaker renaissance.

Sensing a shift, newcomer Nike created the ideal shoe for the Me Generation: the Nike Cortez. Available in a number of bright colorways with an immediately identifiable logo, it was designed for those who wished to stand out on the dance floor track as well as the running track.

Traditional sneaker companies weren't the only ones capitalizing on the public's growing penchant for sneakers. In 1984, Gucci released an Italian-made tennis shoe with the brand's signature green and red stripes on the heel, and "Gucci" printed on the tongue.

No one embodied the early hip-hop aesthetic as fully as rapper-DJ trio Run-DMC, whose signature look -- rope chains, Adidas tracksuits and shell-toe Adidas Superstars -- is now emblematic.

And the Superstar becomes this extremely graphic, very visual signifier of urban fashion.

The release of 1986's "My Adidas" -- an ode to a favorite shoe and refutation of hip-hop stereotypes -- led to an endorsement deal with the brand, making Run-DMC the first of what would be many musicians to ink deals with sneaker brands.

The noughties also bore witness to the transformation of business attire. The dot-com boom and emerging start-up culture, along with growing entrepreneurship among hip-hop stars and elite athletes, had produced a generation of men who challenged conventional notions of success, and the associated sartorial codes.

To cater to this more casual corporate cohort, traditional fashion houses like Lanvin met them half-way, imbuing the sneaker with their established elegance and craftsmanship.

In 2011, footwear designer Christian Louboutin -- renowned the world over for his red-soled high heels -- released his first full men's collection. The jewel of his new empire: the studded Roller-Boat sneaker, a reinterpretation of his earlier Rollerboy loafer, complete with red rubber sole. They were an immediate hit.

This is one of the first times when a brand that's so female identified is now eagerly embraced and worn by men. Sneaker culture is suggesting a huge shift in constructions of masculinity ... They allow men to participate in fashion in a way that does not at all call into question their masculinity, so men are able to partake in the luxury associations that are made between shoes and fashion.

Thus the sneaker transcended the bounds of pure practicality and became an object of fashion in and of itself. Like jeans, athletic shoes have transformed from specific purpose apparel to outsider wear to finally the default clothing option worldwide in just a hundred short years. Now that you know a brief history of the sneakers, it's up to you whether you should don a pair or not.

TL;DR: First only the rich could buy sneakers. Then came the time after world war I&II when everybody could afford to buy sneakers. Then all the ballers were like "Watch me dunk with my sneakers." Then all the rappers were like "Look at my hos and my sneakers." Then all the fashion brands were like "Let us make it so only the rich can buy sneakers again." Then all the tech bros were like "I'm too cool for dress shoes, give me those expensive ass sneakers." Then you asked me "Why should I wear sneaker," then I was like "Let me make the answer more complicated than the question."

Have fun.

As to what that reason is, I don’t know. There is just something they find fascinating about it. Or it’s a habit they acquired long ago and have seen no reason to break. Or it makes them feel like have control over something. Or it gives them a sense of accomplishment.

And there are lots of other possibilities. But I really don’t know.
