Dress Codes - wearing a shirt for men is compulsory the moment you are not officially on the designated beach, and removing your shoes is only permitted on the beach itself. Women may be topless on the beach too, and often are, but the same goes for them too, and then general clothing standard is high. If you are dressed like a back-packer you will not be welcome anywhere. This is one place where you need to dress to impress to just get served a coffee, to be granted access to the Casino, or any upmarket hotel/restaurant you would need to look the part. The Police in Monaco are also very heavy handed when dealing with anything they don’t like the look of, and have carte-blanche when deciding whats not good enough to be seen on their precious streets…..towing a caravan, shoddy shoes, having a back-pack - all of these can get you simply ejected from the country and they will expell you as soon as look at you. There is no appeal, and their descision is final, but not permanent, as in if you return 10 minutes later in better shoes, without the caravan and having put the back-pack in storage, you will be welcome back, they don’t bear a grudge, they just want everything looking nice, so slobs beware…..They serve the Monaqasques, not the visitors, and so don’t expect much sympathy if you don’t meet their standards. Your vehicle (if you are foolish enough to bring one into the principality) should also be in a good state. They will randomly just decide you car is not up to standard, and you will be ordered to get out. Caravans, or anything that is towed are not allowed on any inch of Monagasque streets. Bear in mind that there is nowhere to stay in the principality that is affordable, but the excellent connections make it easy to stay just across the border for a fraction of the price. Only the uber rich can actually sleep on Monaqascque territory. The prices are astonishing, so be very careful you know what the price is before you sit down anywhere, or order anything. This is one place where even the comfortably well off will find they can’t afford a table, so pack a day bag. They do have corner shops, so you can buy water or a fanta for the regular price. They do have a very discreet branch of McDonalds, when I say discreet, its not allowed to use yellow in the way they usually do, so their familiar brash colours are banned in Monaco, and whilst I would not usually recommend them, in Monaco it could be the only place where the bill doesn’t cause cardiac arrest. Its tucked into the side of the cliff, just below the Stamp & Coin museum. If you do visit any museum, or go anywhere else that has a toilet, use it, because you won’t be able to just nip into a coffee shop and use theirs as getting past the staff isn’t as easy as in other places. Don’t let any of the above put you off though, Monaco is an amazing day out, just follow the rules, dress nice and don’t bring a camper van.
