The more modern version uses a Hall Effect sensor in place of the coil, but otherwise works the same way.

Once you know what you are going to use it for, then you must determine how much you can afford to spend. Don’t expect it to pay for itself the first time you go into the field! It may, but likely won’t. Now that you know what you want to hunt for and how much you can spend, you can start reading reviews of the various machines and determine what will best suit your needs.
Some of them made for coin shooting will show on the display what coin they think they are detecting. Some will show whether it is a coin shaped object, or a ring, or a pull tab. You will probably want a machine with a “discriminator” function (adjustable!) which will allow you to adjust the response to filter out iron, trash, and ‘hot rocks’ - rocks with high iron content. My Gold Bug discriminator can be adjusted tight enough to filter out most pull tabs, but when I do that I also filter out nickels! ( ratio is digging many, many pull tabs to one nickel, so I filter them out!)
Some detectors will have deeper soil penetration than others, so that might be factor to consider. Some are well suited for detecting in water and on wet beaches, others are not. My Gold Bug coil works fine under water, but I must not get water into the control box.
Coil size and overall weight matter. Larger coils cover more ground at a sweep, but are not as good at exact pinpointing as smaller ones. Weight - well you are going to be carrying this thing and swinging it around for long periods of time. Battery type and size are also considerations. Will you be out long enough to need to recharge batteries. Can you just swap them out for new ones?
OK, now what are some good ones. My list is not complete, but reflects my belief and experience. Each of these manufacturers make several models, some of which are better one thing and worse at others. Reviews of various models is the clue.
FISHER, GARRET, WHITE, RM RICOMAX (a newer company with interesting equipment especially for newbies) , BOUNTY HUNTER, MINELAB are all good machines. Prices can vary from under $100 for a cheap entry level unit to, for one of the Minelab units, over $7000. ( out of my budget!)
Metal detecting is a lot of fun, and can be profitable if you have the time to do it seriously. BUT, be certain you have permission to hunt and dig if you are on private property. You may not know whether or not you are on private property. There is an application called “OnX Hunt” that I have on my smart phone. It is a map/GPS feature that tells whether the land I am standing on is private (with owner’s name) or is public land or some sort of restricted government land. You may want that as well as the detector.
