I think the best way is to dig in and build one. If you already have a design in HTML and CSS that may be the easiest way.

The first time I made a custom theme I was adding a blog to a site I'd built in plain HTML. So my goal was to match the design and replicate the nav so that the blog was seamlessly integrated with the rest of the site. (We've since moved the whole thing into WordPress and redesigned it a few times.)

At the time I downloaded the official WordPress theme from that time, and used it as a reference to create the files I needed in my own theme.

Thus to create single.php (the template for blog posts) I created a new single.php file, added the HTML I was using on the existing pages and pasted in the PHP I needed for the loop from the theme I'd downloaded.

To create my stylesheet I copied my other stylesheet and added the pertinent info to the top. (Based on what I found in the theme I'd downloaded but using my own theme name.)

With a child them, say you want to make changes to the theme’s ‘page.php’ file.

You copy it over to your separate child theme directory, and change it. WordPress knows to use this version of the file in preference.

When you upgrade the original theme, this file is unchanged.

On a good day, there were no change important to you in this file in the upgraded parent theme. Job done.
