My grandparents have always been a very large part of my life. I was at their house for a big part of my childhood since they would look after me and my brother after school. For that reason, I have wanted them to stay alive and still be a part of my life forever. When I would graduate, meet the love of my life, get married, have children. I wanted my children to know my grandparents, because they are such wonderful, selfless people. However, we all know that we are not immortal.
The best gift somebody has ever received was a gift my grandmother gave me. It was Christmas and there were a lot of presents under the tree. My grandmother proudly gave me one to open. When I opened the gift, I was significantly surprised, since it contained two pairs of knitted baby socks. At first I had to grin a little. What did she know that I didn’t?
She told me that her hands were starting to hurt. That she was growing older and older every day. That she was not sure she would be able to knit for much longer. She wanted my children to have something that was made by her.
Currently, my grandparents are still in my life, aged 90 and 85 years old. I am very lucky. My grandmother cannot knit any longer due to her dementia; she forgot how to do it.
I have the socks in a small box in the back of my closet and I cannot wait to put them on the little feet of my future children. They will always remind me of them.
This gift is the best one I have ever received.
