When I was traveling in SE Africa 19 years ago, I was a guest at a safari camp in the Masai Mara (Southern Kenya). The young Masai men and women served us wonderful buffet meals, complete with all sorts of tropical fruits and appetizing vegetables. One of the nights I was there, they also served zebra meat cooked rotisserie style. Having been raised in the U.S. where the idea of eating horse meat is generally eschewed, I was a bit hesitant to try their equine cousins. It was what they were serving though, so I tried it. After all, zebras are so plentiful in the Serengeti plains, they are over-grazing it to the point of desertification; meanwhile millions of people are hungry. Why not eat zebras then? As it turns out, it was actually very tender and delicious. Perhaps it could be compared to veal, but I don’t know, because I don’t eat veal.
