This unusual pairing of a savory dinner food and a sweet breakfast food is particularly popular among black Americans. The crispiness and saltiness of the fried chicken complements the sweet syrup of the waffles in a similar fashion to bacon or some other typical breakfast meat.

While the origins of this dish are disputed (some say it originated in the southern United States, others that it was the creative invention of a nightclub owner in Harlem, New York), one thing is certain: The only thing more delicious than waffles or fried chicken is waffles and fried chicken.
