The baby boomers are named because of the birth rate increase from 1946 to 1964 over the previous 17 years. This huge bubble shaped the economies for the whole of the stages of life of this generation.

There was a boom in baby food, a boom in school needs, new schools, a boom in unemployment, then employment and industry as the workforce swelled, a boom in housing shortage then provision and so on. Now there is a boom in retirement planning but also retro fashions whether it be cars or experiences like music, food or fashion. Baby boomers as a group are still shaping the economy.

So no, the category is due to being part of a real boom, not just an era or an arbitrary date. Any one conceived before the war ended is technically not a baby boomer. Doesn’t mean anything as a measure of human value. It just means they were born in a time of war and not peace.
