My “Coincidental” Marriage

At 35, I had recently ended a toxic 4-year relationship and was absolutely NOT looking for any sort of relationship. I had an office-sharing arrangement with one of my clients and we were supposed to go to lunch one day.

He had an issue come up at the last minute and cancelled our lunch plans. As I’m walking out the door to get something to eat, the securities lawyer who had recently done the company’s IPO just “happened” to drop by for a surprise visit. The client suggested I go to lunch with him instead, so I did.

We had a nice lunch, I told the “goat joke” (don’t ask) and, when we finished, he asked if I was free for dinner. I had no plans, so I said sure.

At dinner, he asked me if we could have lunch again the next day. We had fun and he seemed like a great guy, so I agreed.

Then, at lunch the following day, he asked me to MARRY him. Well, I’d never been married and I thought “Why the hell not”… and I accepted his proposal.

Oh, the “surprise visit” wasn’t just from around the corner. He’d come in from his new home in Switzerland! After my client’s IPO, he decided to move there and develop a practice assisting European/Asian/South American companies who wanted to go public in the US market.

To top it off, my soon-to-be husband told me he had purchased an “apartment” there - after we were engaged, he let me know the “apartment” was the top 2 floors of a subdivided CASTLE.

The coincidence of his walking in that day, having traveled 5,000 miles to “drop by” when I had a last-minute change of lunch plans resulted in my getting married and living in lakeside castle in Switzerland for 14 years.

Is that weird enough for you? It certainly was for my parents!
