We had a papasan chair that I used to sit in to breastfeed my baby both day and night.

I liked it because we fit so nicely and could easily finish the night there if I was too comfy to move. Babe was about 3–4 months old when she started to stare over my shoulder, switching back and forth from my face to something behind me. The chair was in a corner. There was nothing behind me but wall. She did this inconsistently but often enough and usually in the middle of the night. She was about 4–5 months old when she started to detach from the boob, stare over my shoulder, and … smile, the googly beaming smile babies make when they know they’re being admired. Again, not often but often enough and not only in the middle of the night.

She was about 5–6 months old, we’re cuddling in the chair, she’s nursing, and now she stares over my shoulder, detaches from the boob, smiles adorably, and happily says … hi. Hi!

Totally creeped me out. I stopped breastfeeding her there in that chair in that corner and started to sit on the couch across the room. Nighttime feeds were done, and I stopped nursing her at one year. She, however, loved that chair and curled up in it often with her books and probably her invisible friend. I didn’t mind and she doesn’t remember.
