What is the scope of interior design in India?
Interior Design is one of the fast growing industries of the modern era. But in order to discuss the scope of Interior Design in India, we need to start by discussing the factors that are accountable for the same.
Here are a few reasons behind the growing success of the industry:
- The increasing Gross National Income
With the Gross national income of India showing exponential growth throughout the decade people are looking for ways to invest it in themselves. This disposable income is seen getting invested in personal items such as food, hobbies and homes.
People have now become much more inclined to investing in designing and decorating their homes, offices, etc owing to the lifestyle changes. Unlike before when only the royalty possessed properly decorated houses, the majority of homes and offices today are designed.
- The need for home and not a house
With personal branding taking roots the houses have become a reflection of the person, putting comfort and design above all else. People are not satisfied with a shelter anymore. They are looking for a home that is more than its roof and walls. And simply adding a family photo in the living room isn't doing it anymore.
They are looking for a space that is theirs in every way and with the surplus money they have, investing in an interior designer proves to be the right decision for them.
- The Social wave
As opposed to times when people visited each other only on festivals or for specific occasions, everyone is busy making plans from weekend to weekend. The work life balance ideal and the array of options that any urban fabric offers for an outing have increased. Social Media and super fast internet has opened a world beyond their neighbourhood and the options for design have also expanded.
So one can find hotels, pubs, cafes competing for not just quality of food but also the vibe of the space. And an Interior designer becomes the saviour when it comes to creating something so unique and alluring.
- WFH is here to stay
Also with the tendency to spend more and more time at home, a side effect of COVID and lockdowns, the expectations from a home have also increased. It is not just a place when one comes from work for a few hours to sleep, relax, cook, eat, etc. Home has become the sole bearer of one's entire day.
Accommodating Work from Home began to restructure our homes and thus expected them to be efficient in varied aspects. When it comes to office spaces, color coordinating the interiors with the brand is yet another popular trend. The spaces are not only expected to be optimized but also assure the desired effect on a visitor and ideal environment for an employee.
- Open to hire professionals for services
Additionally in this modern notion of professionalism and the need for perfection as well as out of the box, we all have come to rely more and more on professionals rather than DIY. Many people have started agreeing that an Interior designer can do a better job of creating a space that is a reflection of you. Be it in creating a home, an office or any commercial space.
Importance is given to the vibe as well as the functionality and thus the designing is entrusted with an interior designer. The types of projects you can get will include residential, commercial, exhibition interiors and product design. The industry offers a variety of options to choose from which you can slowly find your niche.
As an interior designer myself who started her own company not so long ago I have been through the ups and downs this industry puts on a fresher. I realised the vast gap between college education and field experience.
Hence, I started virtual classes to shape young minds who plan to start their own company, giving them the necessary guidance and training to start a career in interior design. Simply put, I am trying to give them direction and a way to fulfill their dreams.
