There’s a flaw with your question.
Namely that Warner Brothers will never let Zack Snyder make another DC superhero movie.
Following the middling success of Man of Steel and Warner Bros.’ misguided attempt to chase Disney’s Avengers money without first putting in the work (in Disney’s case, five movies featuring solo superheroes before finally brining them together on-screen), the studio decided to entrust Zack Snyder with the keys to the kingdom.
Here’s the problem — the DC Cinematic Universe could have worked — had the studio taken its time, rolling out Man of Steel 2, The Flash, and Wonder Woman before attempting Batman v. Superman, let alone Justice League.
But instead, they changed Man of Steel 2 to Batman v. Superman — introduced Wonder Woman in the film and combined two separate storylines in a rush and haphazard manner that led to the film’s critical and commercial failure.
(Yes — $330 million domestic and $873 million worldwide counts as a failure when your film cost $250 million to begin with. Compare that the previous screen appearance of Batman — The Dark Knight Rises — did $448 million domestic and over $1 billion worldwide.)
But here’s the problem:
BvS’s relatively lackluster performance was a lagging indicator. By the time it came to light, Warner Bros. — and Zack Snyder — were already well into developing Justice League Part 1 and Justice League Part II.
And it didn’t help that newly-cast Batman star Ben Affleck was so visibly disappointed in the failure of Batman v. Superman that rumors began he might not even stick around for Justice League Part II, let alone the solo Batman film he was slated to both direct and star in.
So Warner Bros. went into damage control mode:
- Justice League Part II was scrapped and Justice League Part I was re-worked to make it a stand-alone film.
- Zack Snyder left (ahem! was fired from) Justice League mid-way through production.
- Warner Bros. hired Joss Whedon — the architect of Disney’s monster Avengers movies — to finish the film.
And the resulting production was still a mess — hampered by poor CGI from the re-shoots (including a Henry Cavill’s weird mustache mouth) and the biggest tonal dissonance since Spielberg finished Stanlely Kubrick’s A.I.
Yes - you can buy the stated reason for Snyder’s departure — grief over the death of his daughter — but at best, that’s only part of the story. Note that a full year later he’s not begun work on any other projects.
And as for Justice League’s financial performance?
Nearly catastrophic.
The first film featuring Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash together grossed a total of just $230 million domestic and less than $700 million worldwide.
For comparison’s sake, Disney’s Black Panther film — featuring a C-list superhero virtually unknown outside of comic books — passed $240 million domestic in less than four days.
So no…it will be a long time — if ever, before we see another Zack Snyder DCEU film, let alone a Justice League Part 2 or even a solo Flash film.
