Well, like most things in life, there are margins of acceptable error. Other times there are unacceptable errors. For the sake of this argument, we are not going to discuss those medical professionals who should not be in the operating room to begin with! Those individuals do not exercise precision, so we will not consider them.

So, for the board-certified plastic surgeons that have glowing reviews and oodles of experience, they're pretty darn good. While they can never predict exactly what they will encounter, they do approach the procedure with a plan. If you want your bridge adjusted they will do one thing. While trimming a bump on your bridge mightbe the most straight-forward approach, augmenting the tip and cartilage can be more unpredictable. It just depends on how much you want changed and what needs to be done.

One thing that I think most plastic surgeons should discuss with their patients is their realistic goals. Communicating what should be expected, while not guaranteeing it is the most useful approach. Some people get a little squeamish with the whole “not guaranteeing it” part, but a look into their reputation and their past patients can help calm those nerves. This can be very useful for steering a patient's expectations and opening a discussion on the final product, as opposed to an idea that is hard to imagine.
