I worked as a merchant seafarer before at a Japanese owned company. One of their offices is located in Manila. And, the coolest perk of having a job as seafarer is that you can travel the world for free. Yes, it’s for free.
That photo of me was taken last March 2015 during the delivery of our vessel in Usuki, Japan.
The main business of our company, which is a shipping company, is to transport oil and chemical cargoes from the port to port around the world. When our tanks are all empty, our client will advise us to load some cargoes in that same port or sometimes in a different port. To be honest, it is a very risky job because we are always exposed to harmful and toxic chemicals. These cargoes will be discharged in a port of their desire. Since I haven't been to another country before, I find it very exciting that I had a chance to see places that I never been.
I was lined-up to work on board a chemical tanker. I signed a one year work contract. The ship where I was assigned was still in a shipyard in Japan. We arrived in Japan very ahead of time and unfortunately the ship was not ready for its maiden voyage. Because of that, we stayed longer in Japan which is kind of good opportunity. The delay gave me more time to explore the country. During the day, we all work at the shipyard. During the afternoon, after work, we can do whatever we want. We were free during Sundays. I had so much fun. I fell in love with the country and with its hospitable and respectful people.
We walk a few miles to go to the shipyard which is just a few blocks away from our hotel. It was fun. We always passed these boring trees without any leaves. I just figured out that those were cherry blossom trees when pink flowers started to appear. I was so lucky to have seen what a cherry blossom tree looks like in real life. It’s like a dream turned into reality.
We stayed in Japan for almost a month. I had never expected that nor the company. But, they can’t blame nobody because we can’t go on board a vessel that is not ready to sail.
We left Japan for South Korea in April. I thought that the fun was over but it was just the beginning. We’ve soon traveled to several different countries like the USA and the Netherlands. Sometimes, we traveled back and forth to similar locations.
I was in Brazil.
Then, I was in Argentina the next month.
I’ve also met a lot of people along the way and experienced different cultures. It was one of the best moments of my life that I’ll never ever forget.
Our destination is always a mystery. We always wait for a confirmation from the client. After that, an e-mail from the Philippine office will be sent.
It was a great experience. And, I always make sure to ask for a shore leave whenever I can. Because, I might never had this same opportunity again in the future. I am so glad that I did cherished every moment that I had as long as I can.
Now, I work at a US owned company. Our client is also from the US. Our office is located in the Philippines. If you would ask me if this current job allows me to travel for free, well, the answer is no. But, at least my new company offers great health care benefits too plus I can spend more quality time with my family and friends which I never had before.
