Some people prefer the sound and the appearance of a live band over having a DJ playing recorded music. This tends to be the case more often at high-end, high-budget weddings where everything is really extravagant, but the hosts feel that a DJ might “pull down” the overall ambience of the wedding. Even as a DJ, I’ll concede that guests may be more impressed when they walk in and see a 5-piece or 7-piece band rather than a single DJ standing behind a table or a facade.

That being said, there are plenty of high-end DJs who put on a really good presentation and have a slick looking setup. They really can be just as impressive as a band, if not better. But depending on where you’re getting married, there may or may not be very many options in the area… and if those high-end DJs are already booked, the idea of a live band might become more appealing than “settling” for whatever cheaper, less-polished DJs are still available for your wedding date.

Now, I’ll argue the DJ’s side of things: a DJ, even a high-end DJ, is usually going to be cheaper because most DJs work alone, or maybe bring one assistant. If you get a band, you’re paying and feeding all the members of the band, and some bands also bring a “roadie” to set up / tear down all of the equipment, cables, etc.

Bands get tired, and sometimes take breaks between sets. Bands can only play the songs they know well through lots of rehearsing. If you have a lot of specific song requests that the band doesn’t know, they might charge you extra for the hours they’ll need to rehearse the song prior to your wedding. Some bands do a great job with certain genres of music, and might just be “so-so” at other types of music. If the band has only one lead singer, you might get tired of hearing the same person singing every single song all night.

By contrast, the DJ can play music non-stop, they can play whatever songs you want (if you request anything they don’t already have, they can just buy and download those). Even if the DJ needs to step away for a few minutes to use the restroom or something, the music can keep playing. And you’ll hear the actual songs by the original artists, rather than one or two people doing covers of all those songs.

I think a good band will make your event more memorable than a DJ, but a good DJ will have all the current music & obvious classic ‘hits’ that are fine/expected for dancing, plus DJ’s are usually very comfortable with the various cheesy ‘emcee’ announcing duties that come with working a wedding reception.

The best wedding receptions I ever attended as a guest:

1. A big swing jazz band (at least 10–15 musicians) playing all of the classic American Pop Standards

2. A ‘James Brown’ type of band, very high-energy rock band plus a horn section.

(You would have to have some serious money for either type of ensemble!)

Another common choice is to have a solo musician or small combo play during the cocktail hour/dinner, and then have a DJ for the dancing and MC portion of the evening. (I’ve been a cocktail hour musician many times, playing events where a DJ takes over after my work is done.)

Yes! As a wedding DJ I can (and have) destroy a band. Here is why:

1. I have an unlimited song choice. If a song is on a record label it is available to me and I can play it. A band on the other hand can’t not play songs they don’t know.
2. I can separate songs into 4 or more parts and play parts of each one simultaneously. A band can’t do this, especially on the fly in real-time.
3. I can do all kinds of effects with digital music (I have 42 sound effects). A band is extremely limited with sound effects.
4. I can play a six-hour DJ set outside in Phoenix Arizona in August. The band member's performance degrades in the Phoenix heat (115 in the shade) after one hour.
5. I don’t need to do sound checks when I am done setting up. The band must do sound checks to make sure all the instruments can be heard.
6. Bands cost more. At least a good band.

The list goes on and on.

In the ““old days” - the 60’s thru the 90’s, most wedding bands (and most bands in general) actually learned and fully memorized their songs - words, chords, and arrangements.. Those that didn’t might have maybe a keyboard player who used a “Fake Book” to lead the band, and the other members would follow along.

Now many - maybe even most - live wedding bands use iPads, or similar type tablets on stage for words and chords, and don’t fully memorize their material. So I think the word “still” in the question is kind of misused. Most wedding bands didn’t use sheet music years ago, but many use electronic cheat sheets today.

My husband and I hired the band that played at our friends’ wedding.

They found the band through sheer luck. They were eating dinner at a restaurant that was also hosting a wedding where this band was playing. She loved the music, and just walked into the reception and started dancing! She was asked to leave, of course, and she said, “I’ll leave if I can have the contact information for the band.” She got the contact info, left, and later booked the band for her and her partner’s wedding.

We went to their wedding, and the band was great, so we booked them for our wedding.

One thing I really appreciated about them was that they weren’t too loud. I’ve been to so many weddings where the band or DJ cranks the volume to 11 so people can’t have conversations. During their sets, if you wanted to dance, you danced, and if you wanted to sit and chat with family and friends, you could actually do so without yelling.

I have always preferred white gold 18K plain with bevelled edge.

As to the entertainment I would imagine there are hundreds of great musicians who play at weddings.

Being British having live music at a wedding apart from the organist and choir in the church is unusual. We always have DJ’s who play great cheesy music.

Even celebrities engage a cheesy DJ, somebody who is a reasonably famous British TV actress insisted on “It Must Be Love” by Madness for the first waltz.

You can’t beat Dancing Queen and Greased Lightning followed by Its Raining Men and Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive and some Motown and Oasis. With such eclectic musical requests its probably not surprising we opt for DJ’s.

If the wedding is in classical atmosphere, I recommend Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” or Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus.”

I had live music at my ceremony and the early part of my reception - just flute and piano - but that was because friends who were professionals volunteered as a wedding gift. A live band for post dinner dancing would have been too expensive for us. We just had a good DJ recommended by the venue.

Weddings for the most part are a pain in the ass to play. High maintenance wedding planners…nervous mother in laws, pushy father in laws…all usually know nothing about hiring musicians and treating them with any respect. Then…you find a band you like…agree on a price and then someone in the wedding party wants to start dictating what songs they wanna hear after the fact. I’ve been there…many times. You do a soon to be newly wed a favor…and verbally agree on what, how the band will do…will be treated and the newly hired wedding planner comes in and changes everything. The band still has to load up, load in…be there before the guests arrive…it turns out it’s not a 2–3 hour event….the day ends up being a 7–9 hour day of schlepping the gear in and out of wherever and dealing with drunks that wanna sit in and play FreeBird or Mustang Sally…If you have a favorite band you like…they live locally. You like what they play…their sound…their tunes. Hire ‘em. Shoot straight with them and feed ’em when dinner can be served. I’ve worked for contractors around here…You’ll see their ads wherever the topic of wedding stuff is advertised. These guys will charge 3–8 times the going rate…and pocket most of the dough. The band will be basically a pick up band of individuals that don’t usually play together and will wade through the arrangements with guys they’ve never played with before in lots of cases and could be great players and singers…stuck in the local casual scene wherever you like and wish they were on the road doing their own original material instead of playing cover tunes and the latest whoever favorite tunes of the mother in law or the brides maid….Good luck. Find a great local band you like and pay them good money for doing a tough job.

Although it is comparing apples to oranges, they can. I’ve have DJed many weddings where people actually get upset when the band comes back on, since they prefer the DJ play instead! Now I have to admit this was likely due to the band only playing one type of music and not doing it particularly well, or maybe I had the party rockin’?

Although there’s simply nothing like the “live” sound you get from a live band, remember that really good bands that play cover songs are hard to find- as it is very difficult to emulate songs that were recorded, engineered, and produced in million dollar studios as are most hit records a DJ would play.

Also keep in mind one way a DJ could be considered “better,” is that they have NO limits- that is they can play any genre at their disposal (these days if not on their hard drive they can also stream anything you want from Spotify, YouTube, etc.). Bands are good but will not have this ability- and even if they did, most would not do it well simply as a matter of practicality (that is they are limited in the sound they can reproduce by their abilities, song knowledge, available gear, etc.). Bands can simply only scratch the surface of certain popular songs they know.

Whereas a DJ has endless possibilities as to WHAT they can play, and if they are one of the good ones- also has a repertoire of MC skills that can take the party to the next level of entertainment for the wedding couple and guests (using party favors, games, contests, and more).

Yet another way DJs come out on top, is not just their ability to play any and all music available, but remember they can go on for many more hours uninterrupted without tiring- especially when you feed them like most couples do. Bands are pretty limited in their scope to rock the party- especially for long periods of 6–8 hours; vocals chords get strained, and the band members will get physically tired of standing playing songs after a while.

Simply put, DJs just bring much more to the table when compared to bands- so unless the band is out of this world- I would highly recommend hiring a good wedding DJ over an “ok” band any day.
