I cannot find any specific and undisputible facts in regards to the question but I would guess it came from ideas that electricity was somehow like an x-ray in that it shows a ‘skeleton like’ image.

Another, related reason, may have to do with things like ‘x-ray’ glasses that used to be sold in comics that purpoted to allow people to see in ‘x-ray’ vision.
