My ex and I were voracious readers, something we passed on to my daughter. We had age-appropriate books for her since she was born. She and one of us read to each other daily. I should also mention that she started talking at an early age and could carry on a conversation with anyone by age 2.

We subscribed to Readers Digest and left it on an end table for anyone to read. Imitating her parents, or so I thought, my daughter would also sit on the end of the couch and look through the book.

One day, as we are all driving down the road, my daughter says, “The other day, I read in Readers Digest.” I spun around looking at her and said to my ex, “What 5 year old starts a conversation with, ‘The other day I read in Readers Digest.’ !?”

30 years later and I still love telling that story ❤️
