I have been going to the same stylist for over 25 years now, and have gotten a lot of great hair advice from him.

First, when coloring, stick to the two-shade rule….go two shades lighter or darker, and that’s it. Going from dark brown to blonde (which I did for a while, in my late teens) is highly damaging, due to the lightening process required, and maintenance needed thereafter.

Second, don’t wash every day! It took me decades to follow this one, because I have rather oily hair that felt ‘dirty’ in-between, but the secret is brushing to distribute that oil to the parched ends. I now wash every other to every two days.

Buy processing caps, and give your hair a good deep conditioning treatment a couple of times a week. Pay special attention to the ends, which are the ‘oldest’ part of each strand.

Get regular trims to ward off split ends; doesn’t have to be a lot, even 1/2″ on a regular basis works wonders.

Take a good multi-vitamin, eat a balanced diet, massage your scalp regularly, and eliminate stress as much as possible.

Don’t flit from salon to salon, it’s much better to develop an ongoing ‘hair relationship’ with a stylist, who knows what styles/colors/treatments work best for you.
