Right to Information is a statutory right given by our parliament in 2005 to ensure transparency, accountability and efficiency in the working of our government. Now every citizen of India is empowered to get the necessary information from the various government departments, bodies, agencies etc.
However, there shall be no obligation to give any citizen information which would effect sovereignty and integrity of India, security, strategic, scientific or economic interest of state, relation with foreign state, disclosure of information which may constitute contempt of court, information received in confidence from foreign governments etc.
This Official Secrets Act was introduced by the Lord Curzon in 1904. The required information under Official Secrets Act may be denied by the government departments keeping in view the sovereignty, unity and integrity of our nation. Unfortunately the provisions of Official Secrets Act are misuse by government officials to deny the information on ground of sovereignty, integrity and unity of our country.
