Spherical symmetry is the term used for describing the geometry of stars and planets in general relativity. Assuming spherical symmetry of earth gives you some what simple mathematical formulation for dealing with earth’s gravitational field. But we know that earth is not perfectly symmetrical sphere. At equator it has a bulge and at poles it is somewhat flat. So it is an egg shape.
