My brother, who was one of our ushers, got lost on the way to the church. This was 2004, and he didn’t have a cell phone, or anyone’s cell phone number to pull over and call to find out where the church was (he had been there the day before for our rehearsal). The irony is, the reason he got lost was that his girlfriend was taking too long to get ready, so he left ahead of my parents and his girlfriend because he didn’t want to be late to my wedding.
On top of him being lost, we had a massive central Texas thunderstorm that day (it had never rained on that day in recorded history), so we didn’t know if he had been in an accident or something. Traffic was problematic all over town, and people were late getting there. We postponed the ceremony as long as possible, but our pastor had a hard stop at a certain point, and I was NOT leaving that church without getting married.
We had a friend who happened to be wearing a dark sport coat walk my MIL down the aisle, and my BIL walked my mother down the aisle. My mother tried to get us to wait to see if my brother arrived, but we could only wait so long. I decided John (my brother) would not want to be the reason I didn’t get married and went ahead without him. About halfway through the sermon my MOH tapped me on the shoulder and let me know John had made it.
We celebrate our 15th anniversary soon and will forever have something to tease my brother about :)
