I must tell you that this is MY opinion, which pertains to the experience I had in Germany (4,5 long years living there). You’re welcome to disagree, but please respect my opinion. My opinion is not meant to offend or hurt anybody’s feelings.
- In general, very few Germans speak English (or any other language, really). Given my family’s background (me and my brother change languages frequently when talking to each other or our parents - we use 3 languages interchangeably), this is very surprising to me.
- Germans are brutally honest when expressing their opinions, to the point of actually being rude. Many of my latino friends said the same during the period I was in Germany. We use to make jokes about how honest and rude they can be.
- Germans don’t really look at one another, on the streets, and they don’t interact much with strangers. In the Strassenbahn, there was always a silent that was terrifying to me.
- Germans usually don’t kiss. They hug or handsake. Having been raised in a warm culture, to an Italian mother and a Canadian father, that is very odd to me.
- My German co-workers didn’t use to express themselves, but when I asked their opinion about something, they had a ton of observations, and mostly negative. Sounded like, you don’t talk about it, everythings good, but if you ask something about it, everything seems to be wrong.
- Germans do eat raw meet on bread. Literally, I’ve seen Germans coming to a supermarket and ordering a sandwich with raw meet. I can’t remember the name of that, though.
- They get exited over hot wine (I am not kidding, google up Glühwein)!!! This is considered almost like a crime in the places I grew up in…
- Germans are very very cold (especially to a Latino like myself). This is quite evident when you try to talk to strangers, walk around, shop, etc. Having sex is equally a cold experience (I won’t say more about this as I think its appropriate on Quora).
- Germans are very relaxed when it comes to being naked. I’ve seen a few pairs a boobs.
- Germans are not much into luxury / fanciness. If it works, thats enough with them.
- Germans like potatoes a lot, and usually use a lot of sauce with meals.
- Germans go to bed very early and wake up very early. Most of my German neighbours have dinner at 7pm.
- There are traffic radars everywhere. I collected tons fines. Surprisingly, up to 20km/h over the speed limit, the fines are ridiculously low (€10–15).
- They can’t really multi-task.
- Sparking water rocks in Germany. I ended up liking it a lot.
- In Germany, more than 10% of the population is Turkish. I love Turkish people, food and culture.
- German parents let their children mess with other people and don’t tell them to stop!
If you think I let some bad experiences come through, you’re probably right. If you think that I don’t like Germany or Germans, you are right too, I don’t. But that is just as valid as saying that I love Italy or Swedish girls. Please respect my opinion.
