It would first be necessary to uncover who Michael actually is in order to understand the answer to this question.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 (KJV) - For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Who is this archangel and why is this the voice used when Jesus is clearly the one shouting?
Does Jesus have laryngitis during such a pivotal point in humanity's history and deliverance?
And what does any of this have to do with Michael.
To uncover those truths we would need to reveal the truth of what the word archangel means.
I found this on Google which I very much disagree with.
“an angel of high rank.”
Certainly, the “high rank” part is true but I contend with the words “an angel.”
In Dictionary. com I found this about the word arch.
a combining form meaning “chief, leader, ruler,” used in the formation of compound words: monarch; matriarch; heresiarch.
So arch is the same thing as:
- chief
- leader
- ruler
It is on this note that we can now uncover the truth about this verse.
Jude 9 (KJV) - Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
So Michael the chief ruling leader of the angels is being spoken of above.
The question remains, who is this a reference to?
Another Scripture might help here:
Revelation 12:7 (KJV) - And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
With this understanding, who could this possibly be referring to other than Jesus Christ, Himself?
No, Jesus is not an angel.
However, would I be in error to suggest strongly that Jesus is the chief leading ruler of the angels?
Thus Michael the archangel is simply another reference to Jesus much like Lion of Judah or Rock of Ages is.
Now we get to a point where we need to understanding who Jesus is. I go into much more detail about this in other answers but here I would like to put forth.
John 3:16 (KJV) - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Wherein we find that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God.
One day we too will be sons of God.
Romans 8:17 (KJVJ) - And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Truth is we already are, but with the entrapments of sin upon our lives at the present time.
Luke 3:38 (KJV) - Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
The Father and Son seek a Kingdom of equality where one does not exalt himself above another like this.
Isaiah 14:13-14 (KJV) -
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
It is within these parameters that we can come to understand the dynamics between Jesus and Lucifer.
Ezekiel 28:14 (KJV) - Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
Both Lucifer and Jesus served the same purpose as they related to the arch of the covenant within the holy of holies of the heavenly sanctuary.
In that way, yes Michael and Lucifer were brothers in spirit, compassion, and heart but not literally.
When this happened everything came crumbling down.
Ezekiel 28:15 (KJV) - Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
