I am so happy to have come across this question because I am so proud of my decision to make this purchase and I love to talk about it. Seriously I've just been waiting for a chance to bring it up on here and finally I have that chance.
I bought a grappling hook. And I named her Lola.
So I bought it the morning after a party, when I was very tired and very hungover. I was half asleep when I did it, which was probably a good thing because if I was wide awake and had a clear head, I probably would have talked myself out of buying it.
When I ordered it online, I asked for the standard shipping. But somehow I got the express shipping and had to pay $20 more than I planned on, but honestly, I didn't care. I got a grappling hook, and grappling hooks are cool.
As it happens, I was at another party the weekend after the last party. And honestly, at least 80% of what I talked about that night was my brand new grappling hook. I wasn't planning on talking about it that much, but I was just so excited to tell my friends about it that I couldn't help myself. Plus, they had a lot of questions about it, I wasn't just annoying them to death with my constant grappling hook talk. There was a good back and forth about it.
In hindsight, it was a mistake to not bring my grappling hook with me. But I took transit to get to the party, and I didn't want to be the weird guy on bus with a grappling hook. I also had some stops to make on my way, and I don't think the enployees at the liquor store would have appreciated my grappling hook, or the rope that came with it.
I've barely even used it. The day after buying it my brothers and I took it to the park and threw it around a little bit (away from people of course). The only problem was that there were kids on the playground, so we couldn't swing around on it or anything.
I keep it in my backpack now, so I have it with me most of the time. It rarely comes out of my backpack. But the thing about grappling hooks is that if you're even in a situation where you need one, you desperately need one. That means that if it comes in handy even once, it's paid for itself a thousand times over. There's not many tools you can say that about. Like a hammer is useful, but if you're in a bind and need a hammer, you can just use a rock. If you're in a bind and need a grappling hook, there's not much that can you can substitute for it.
Also, if anybody I know is planning an elaborate heist, a real Ocean’s 11 type situation, who do you think they're gonna call? Me. The guy with a grappling hook. Why? Because you're a fool if you plan a heist and don't have a grappling hook on hand. It doesn't even need to be part of the heist plan. It can just be there as a backup.
Somebody I know going on a Indiana Jones/Uncharted treasure hunting adventure and needs a sidekick with a gimmick? Again, they're gonna call me. And Lola.
It's probably my favourite thing that I own. I love having it so much. I don't care if it will ever come in handy or not, it's just a fun, cool thing to have and I'm glad I have it.
EDIT: I should probably mention that since writing this answer, I have hit accidentally hit myself in the face with my beloved grappling hook, which resulted with the inside of my lip being split open and subsequently stitched up and my two front teeth being chipped and replaced with caps. Just so we're clear, I still do not regret buying my grappling hook or using it, I would just like to remind everybody to be safe and responsible with their grappling hooks. They are tools, not toys, and trust me, you do not want to forget that.
