We use several services depending on what we are trying to accomplish. Most real media placement however, comes from specific pitches to targeted media sources via phone, email, or social media. We feel that Media Placement is an entirely separate process from Press Releases.
- Social Media. We have been known to reach out to specific journalists via social, but the primary reason we use Social Media is to create buzz around a topic or to augment the press release distribution and to merchandise success when we do receive organic media.
The short answer is that Press releases are still quite valuable in our process and I don’t see an end to that anytime soon. There are some interesting innovations that are operating via Google and at least one PR distributor. That is a topic for another discussion. There are many PR purists that do not believe press releases are good for anything. I am happy to put our results up against anyone. http://consultaro.com

Search Engine Optimization and Recognition
Press release copy, created by considering Search Engine Optimization criteria, helps you to appear in online searches.
The level of coverage you get with your press releases in online news sites has a significant effect on your recognition in search engines.
Press releases that include the targeted keywords support your SEO efforts. When you carry out regular media communications, your name comes up more often in searches and search engines perceive you as a source. Writing SEO-compliant press releases may increase your website traffic and ensure search results to your advantage.
Reliability, Image and Reputation
News stories covered by prestigious publications build trust among your target audience. With more news stories featured in the press, your brand recognition and reputation improve and your image is affected positively. Press releases enable you to be perceived as an expert in your industry.
Branding
As the news stories featured in newspapers, magazines, news sites, blogs and social media have a positive impact on your reliability, image and reputation, they also help you to be recognized in your industry and business circles and create a positive perception within the organization as well. Branding, a process that nearly every individual, institution or organization aspires to achieve, gains momentum with your media communications.
Public Disclosure
Press releases also serve to inform the public as the most important rule of journalism. Press releases enriched with research results and quotes by experts are used as a means of public disclosure.
Return
Businesses carry out all communication, marketing and sales activities to achieve maximum benefit and revenues. However, communication activities do not return to an individual, institution or organization directly in the form of more sales. The most important activity that contributes to brand image and reputation is press release distribution. In order for a press release that promotes brand recognition to achieve its goal, all processes including creation and distribution could be accurately managed.
Visibility
Press releases increase the visibility of your brand in the media. Being the first brand that comes to mind, or Top of Mind - TOM is key for all businesses operating in sales. With press release activities planned for the long term, you can improve your recognition and chances of being preferred in the purchasing decision.
Sustainability
Sustainability is key in advertising, publicity and public relations activities. The activities carried out at regular intervals ensure that an individual, institution or organization stay in mind.
Press releases offer the opportunity to sustain these activities at affordable prices.

3 Ways to Improve the SEO of Your Press Releases
You might be surprised to learn that over 90% of websites don’t get any organic traffic from Google. So even if your clients don’t have their own internal SEO strategy, you can still give them an SEO boost by optimizing their press releases for SEO. Most notably, the three biggest factors that will influence SEO credibility are the keywords you use, the format of the press release, and the backlinks you include.
1. Know your keywords
Google and other search engines rank web pages by crawling them for certain key terms. So it’s important to know what your client’s customers might be searching for in order to find their website. To determine the right keywords, it’s best to use a specific SEO tool to do your research, but the idea is pretty straight forward.
In your press release, make sure you’re using these keywords strategically. They should be in the headline of the press release, any subheadings, and even in the image caption. Google and other search engines specifically crawl these areas of text in order to pull keywords and use them in the ranking algorithm. However, be careful not to overuse them. A good rule of thumb is to use your keywords no more than five times within your press release (or any piece of content).
2. Think about format
Most press releases follow a similar format—headline, subhead, intro paragraph, description of the news, and a quote from a company executive. But when you’re writing a press release with SEO in mind, it’s important to understand the format that is preferred by search engines.
Generally speaking, search engines have a much easier time crawling content and finding keywords when the content is scannable. That means using bullet points, numbers, lists, and subheads that break up the text. Avoid writing blocky paragraphs, and instead, try to use shorter, more condensed paragraphs. If you choose to use pullout quotes, add your keywords there, as well.
3. Use links strategically
The last major element to SEO is backlinking. In a press release, there are a few areas where you’ll commonly place your links—in the introductory paragraph and in the boilerplate, with maybe one or two throughout the main text. But using backlinks behind your client’s keywords in their press releases will help them rank higher for those terms.
After you’ve determined your client’s main keywords, identify the links that correspond best to those terms. Ideally, these links would be landing pages that the client wants to drive traffic to, and that has some sort of sales funnel attached to it. For example, if your press release is announcing a new product line, link to the product landing page behind one of their keywords, rather than their home page or a recent blog post.

Communication has been dramatically changed by social media. It was because of these platforms that great pop culture moments have been created, and even political revolutions have started by people getting together on them.
With companies still trying to figure out the best way to utilize the power of social media platforms, one of the most well-known marketing tools has transformed its original purpose.
The press release has become more important than ever when promoting a company and its products or services. Although press releases themselves have greatly changed through the years, especially when companies realized the importance of digital marketing, they’re still incredibly useful and beneficial.
Digital press releases give the publisher the ability to add many other features, such as adding hyperlinks to other webpages from the company right in the press release. Additionally, businesses tend to use very specific keywords when talking about their products, and adding those keywords that relate to the company means the press release can be even more optimized for search engine results pages.
Furthermore, press releases are used as a tool for direct communication, where companies are easily able to deliver messages to the public and their target audience without going through other channels, and they’re also seen as a permanent piece of a company’s public record. This means that people are able to locate it and read it again in the future because it’s so easily accessible.
Press release tips from journalists
Here are a few tips given by journalists when it comes to writing effective press releases:
* Be prudent regarding issuing press releases about every move a company does. That might cause journalists to tune out when you have real news to announce.
* Craft a compelling headline: Journalists are busier than ever, if you can get straight to the point in the headline, this will save them time. Of course you’ll want to support it with strong content in the body of the release as well, but if they don’t make it past the headline, it won’t matter.
* Be reachable: Be sure the primary contacts and quoted sources are in the office t...

A media measurement service that incorporates Google Analytics can help savvy PR practitioners prove the value of press releases by examining referral traffic. To analyze how referral traffic from press releases increase conversions, experts recommend these steps:
- Create goals in Google Analytics that identify desirable visitor actions, or conversions, such as downloading a white paper or requesting a for product demos.
- Add UTM parameters to links in press releases to identify the traffic from the news release.
- Set up a specific category or directory within your media monitoring dashboard to collect and analyze PR placements and link those media clips to Google Analytics.
- Examine the Google Analytics Referrals report under Acquisitions to view the number of visits news releases sent to the site. News releases may refer higher-quality traffic, such as traffic with low bounce rates, more pages per session and longer session durations, than traffic from other sources.
- Open the Goals Overview report under Conversions to view how PR placements increased sales leads and other conversions.
PR can also use Google analytics to infer how many people visited their website after they read a press release — or an article initiated by a press release — even when they didn’t click on links within the news release. People often visit websites after they read a news announcement.
The time comparison feature, which compares traffic changes between different periods, can indicate how PR campaigns help boost traffic over extended time periods.

As a small or medium business owner with limited resources, how could you spread the word about your company and products in the most effective manner, without breaking the bank to reach your target? Because you know that content is king and distribution is queen, you want to bet everything on stellar copy that will sweep your potential buyers off their feet and make them daydream about your merchandise and talk about it in their sleep. In this moment, the question that you should ask yourself is this: how do you choose the right type of content and distribution services to achieve this specific goal?
Each type of content plays an important part that you simply can’t afford to ignore. For instance, while landing pages help you introduce your brands and goods to the world and convert leads into customers, blog posts allow you to establish a more personal connection with your readers, by answering some of their most burning questions, offering advice, expressing your expert opinion and sharing your insight with your audience. On the other hand, press releases let you build trust and authority on different fronts, by stimulating journalists and media outlets to cover your story, and also by giving your prospects a new reason to visit your store, land on your website, find out more about your most recent accomplishments and try, buy and spread the word about your new product or service. Aside from bringing credibility and allowing you to stay in the public eye, press releases can also boost your profit margins, by highlighting the most remarkable key benefits and features of your products that position your merchandise on top of any other alternatives currently available on the market. You may feel the need to write and distribute press releases on different occasions, to announce a series of achievements, such as new technological developments, a product or service launch, a new partnership with a prominent company, a milestone that you have just reached or new acquisitions. Press releases are a great way to build trust and credibility in your field of activity. An excellent PR campaign will offer you the chance to brand yourself as a high-authority artist/business owner and underline the unique attributes of your products. Press releases published by several media outlets will offer you valuable backlinks to your website. Moreover, by optimizing your content, you could increase its visibility online and make your articles searchable on the Internet. Tags pointing to your topic and a set of relevant, industry and company-specific keywords are extremely important elements that you should add to your copy to optimize your press releases and unlock instant SEO benefits.

That said, the press release has also transformed with time, with video content and the likes embedded to make the tool more relevant and contemporary.
The caveat - many of us in the PR fraternity have the tendency to shoot out press releases for all and sundry reasons, sometimes under client duress and at times for want of some more important tool in the communication armor. Some even promise clients of taking out so many press releases every month or so - making the release a laughing stock.
This has significantly eroded the credibility of the press release, with research pointing that less than 5% of releases get even opened by the media.
Any newsworthy press release will survive despite odds, and as a PR tool they will be alive and kicking for a long time to come.
Happy and sensible press releasing! :-)

There is definitely such a thing as bad publicity. Some examples: Seaworld's attendance, and their stock, dropped dramatically after the documentary Blackfish came out.
Lululemon's shares dropped after the founder said that some of the problems with their yoga pants were because they just didn't work for some women's bodies.
So yes, there is certainly bad publicity, and it can hurt the bottom line and the stock price of a company.
The opportunity is always there to turn bad publicity into good. If the bad publicity is handled correctly, it can actually be turned around into a positive.

The internet disrupted all that, especially after the arrival of Google News, because companies that put out press releases now could reach their customers and other audiences directly, rather than sending releases to the media in hopes of coverage.
The company that changed the press release forever was PRWeb.
In 1999, a man named David McInnis distributed a press release via PR Newswire and was disappointed in the results. That led him to found his own internet distribution service, PRWeb.
PRWeb upended the rationales, distribution methods and audiences for the press release forever. Before PRWeb, traditional PR wire services like PR Newswire and Business Wire had licensing-based models for news distribution. Similar to newswire services like the AP and Reuters, they focused on distributing content directly to gatekeepers like newspapers, TV and radio stations.
Those gatekeepers determined how and whether to turn press releases into news stories.
PRWeb, by contrast, distributed releases directly over the internet -- and as the internet came to subsume traditional media, the web emerged as a force for traditional PR wires to reckon with.

The headline was just to catch the editor’s attention, and you knew it was wasn't going to be used.
It was triple spaced because the editor would edit it to fit the publication style, and it was inverted pyramid because it was going to be cut to fit the available space.
Now, it's very likely that your release will be picked up in its entirety, so it's best if you rewrite it for each of lists you send to.
Thanks for the A2A.
Most of the answers already submitted are great answers and should give you an indication why PR is important in marketing mix.
To simplify it a bit, let us think of a hypothetical scenario: Meet Ms Jane.
- Ms. Jane is in her 20s, lives in the city and is looking for product X.
- You are the owner of MegaCorp in the business of selling product X
- You are NOT the only company selling product X. Lots of other competitors sell them same product with very similar specs
- Ms Jane happens to be in the market looking for product X

- Ms Jane happens to be in the market looking for product X
Now, if MegaCorp only does pure demand gen marketing activities - Ads, for example, Mrs Jane will most likely end up knowing through the paper and TV ads about the product, its technical features, price and maybe where/how to get the product.
However, Ms Jane lives in 2019.
Before she buys anything from anywhere, she is usually keen on knowing a bit more about who she is buying from and the people behind it:
- What do people like her say about the company and product?
- Is the company ethical in its treatment of workers? It is socially responsible?
- Does the company apply environmental codes in its manufacturing?
- Is it active in its community? Does it give back to society?
- Who are the executives behind it and are they good people/leaders?
All the above are things that are typically driven by company PR team. Ms Jane goes online….and this is where PR is now increasingly growing in important. They make sure answers to such questions are available, accurate and easy to find and understand.
Had Ms. Jane been living in the 80s or even early 90s, it would’ve been rather difficult to find ALL that information without having to go over the national newspaper archives in the public library.
Now, she has answers to all her questions sitting in her pocket, literally one click away. She find the information and completes her purchase decision according to what she finds.
There are more people like Ms Jane today then there were in the 80s or 90s.
So, yes. PR now is, to many many CEOs and business leaders, the most important component in the marketing mix.
Hope this helps.
Here’s what a press release should include:
- First things first, your press release needs to have a catchy headline in order to be successful. It’s the first thing people will read and based on that, they will make their decision whether they want to read the whole thing or not.
- The second most important part of writing a press release is to craft the lead. That’s exactly where the impatient ones will find the answers to the most important questions, including the five W’s: what the news is about, who is involved, when and where it happened, and why it is important.

- Then, it’s time to give your readers the essential details. And by details, we mean the basic information that is necessary to figure out why this press release is newsworthy. You don’t want to write a novel, just give a brief explanation and get the reporters excited about something they’ll write about.
- Is there anything else you need to add? If so, this is the time to do it—without actually overdoing it. Remember, sometimes less is more, and that’s definitely the case when it comes to writing a good press release. Consider adding quotes and visuals to make the story more interesting.
- Don’t forget to add contact details so journalists will know how to reach you, or anyone else worth contacting. It’s important because they might want to ask some additional questions about the story. If you forget about this part, the chances of getting your release published are basically slim to none.
- In case you’re asking yourself how to end a press release, here’s your answer: have a boilerplate. If you caught the journalists’ attention and they kept on reading until this place, most likely they want to know more about you. The boilerplate is exactly the place where they will find any additional info about your company or you.
I hope that helps! In case you need more guidelines, here’s a useful piece from Prowly to get you started.

When I entered the communications field in 2001 on the side of media, they were the ultimate way of getting the information from ‘brands’ to ‘consumers’. People could start discussing brands in forums, but they would still get the initial information from media. And ads, a significant portion of which also went through media.
So press releases were a vital tool of brands communicating with media representatives. As a journalist, I subscribed to all major PR newswires and monitored the list of companies’ web sites ‘News releases’ sections with a simple crawler. There are lots of answers in this thread describing how to properly write a press release, so I won’t focus on that. But it’s important to note here that the ‘inverted pyramid’ principle, invented and perfected in the past century, still applies today. By the way, it helped me write properly my own PhD theses, but I digress.
The onslaught of social networks in late 2000s and early 2010s gave ground to assumptions that ‘social journalism’ might replace the professional media or significantly shrink their influence. There was a lot of turmoil and panic among communicators, who were struggling to invent new formats, like ‘social media release’ and so on. Looking at this from the ‘brand’ side, I have to say that it took us some time to understand that Facebook and the others are just another type of media, with integrated ‘forums’ functionality, which we already knew from early 2001s. Facebook’s greed for money (well, OK, I have to assume - investors’ greed) didn’t manifest itself abruptly, and their squeezing of brands out of subscriber’s feed was gradual.
But even in the darkest hour for traditional media press releases were very important as clear, sharp and timely statements of company’s official position, especially on crisis topics. Conveniently enough a large portion of top bloggers were also prominent journalists, so targeting them with press releases, to which they are used to, allowed us to cover a large portion of social media influencers, while community managers did the rest.
Now, as the balance of power between bloggers and professional journalists have been settled and seems to drift towards the latter because of social networks’ greed, I strongly believe that the importance of press releases is only going to increase.
A good press release is one that could go into a publication with little or no rewriting. It’s written like a news story—who, what, when, why, and how. It’s written in pyramid form so that it can be cut anywhere—second paragraph, fourth paragraph, seventh paragraph—and the essential information remains. It’s clear and direct . . . just as a news story should be. It’s not “fancy” or clever.

True story: I went to journalism school in Columbia, Missouri, a small town with the huge University of Missouri in it. MU has one of the best journalism schools in the country. So by the time someone got a degree in journalism, that person knew precisely how to write a news story. Many of those graduates stayed in the area; most had grown up in Missouri. And a lot of those graduates went into marketing and public relations for local businesses and other entities.
The University also published a daily newspaper, a very good one, staffed by journalism students. Imagine the scene: You’re a student and working at the paper. You receive a news release from a local business, a politician, or something similar. You have maybe a semester or two of experience. The person who wrote the news release is a graduate of the journalism school, and has put in four years as an undergraduate or nearly two years as a graduate. Frankly, the person writing the release knows a heck of a lot more about journalism and news releases than you do. But it’s a rule at that newspaper that you can’t just use a news release as received. You have to edit it and improve it. And yet, frankly, it’s nearly impossible to do so. The release is written perfectly, just the way it could run in the paper. Now, that was a struggle. Most newspapers aren’t as finicky; if a good release comes in, they’ll often run it as is.
But that’s what a good press release is: A write-up that could be used virtually unedited in the paper.

Without any doubt, the answer to this question is no, because it's impossible. In today’s life, a press release is still a big need for any company, brand, product, and service, etc. No business can improve its marketing effectiveness and popularity without doing press releases because press releases have a potential like no other to entertain a particular issue. Well, talking from the media point of view, press releases are used for the announcement of press conferences or upcoming events sponsored by any other firm.

The whole purpose of marketing is public relations. You want to be able to introduce your product or service and get people to know, like, and trust you. I call that public relations. I guess you could say it’s an important part of marketing as well. Based on the idea that it’s easier to sell products to an existing customer than it is to find new ones, then it’s pretty darn important to build a good relationship with a customer. Now on the slim chance that you’re only ever going to Sell one thing to each customer then I suspect PR may be Less important.
A “press release” is a text intended to inform journalists about something about an organisation or person. For example: a new product, a merge/acquisition, a participation in an event/conference, a new investment, , etc.

The first thing is to determine IF the thing you want to announce is actually newsworthy. It is not unusual that every company thinks their new product is awesome and should be on every front page, but that is frequently not the case. It might be interesting for a segment of the press specialized in a certain industry, but not to everyone.
It is the PR's job to know precisely to which segment of the press the announce will be of interest, and which angle to explore to maximise the chances of coverage. They know the trends, they know which subjects are hot, and can try and find a way to capitalise on these opportunities.
Second, they (should) know the journalists. They (should) know who is more likely to be interested in the announcement, and who is likely not no care, and even who might have strong opinions about the subject (if that may be the case).
I don't know where you're from, but depending on the market there are basically two ways to get press releases to journalists: either you build your own (or buy) a mailing list, with the e-mail adresses of the journalists relevant to your industry, or you publish your press release to a “wire” service (such as Business Wire, PR Newswire, etc). The problem with either of these methods is that journalists usually receive a ton of e-mails everyday, and yours will just be a needle in the hay. So, it helps to have a PR who can craft a personal message to each relevant journalist highlighting the reasons why the announcement might be of interest to their publication.
For a small business, press relations is not rocket science, but it is a very time consuming activity and there are some traps you must know to avoid. If you can afford to take time off from your business’ core activities to do it, be my guest, but if you don't have the experience, good luck.

You can find press release templates online, but here are a few guidelines I can give you as a journalist who has received maybe 100,000 press releases.
- Make it short. No more than one typed page or maybe 500 words in an e-mail.
- Keep in mind your target journalist’s needs. How does your announcement fit her beat? How will reporting out this story provide value to the journalist, her editors, and her audience? Is your release scheduled early enough so that the reporter has enough time to act before a deadline that, if it were missed, would make your story irrelevant? (If you’re pitching something

(If you’re pitching something Christmas-oriented, don’t wait until December. If you’re pitching something tied to a new movie, don’t wait until the day before the movie’s release.)
- Frame the story in a way that meets the needs of the journalist and her readers, not yours.
- Present it like a news story, with a headline, a sub-headline offering further information, and a lead paragraph that grabs attention and offers the key details (who, what, when, where, why, how).
- Explain how reporting your story will provide value to readers. Show that you’ve done your research on the reporter, her beat, and her editorial calendar. This means some personalization, but then, no journalist wants to be on the receiving end of a mass blast that clearly doesn’t take her own needs into consideration. No press release will get deleted faster than one that clearly doesn’t fit the reporter’s beat.
- If you have a photo or video you can embed, that will help keep the reporter’s attention and further sell them on your story.
- Conclude with a brief explanation of who your client or organization is. Specify credentials that make your organization’s experts sources who will bolster a news story’s credibility. Add contact information so that they can e-mail you, call you, and book an interview with your experts.
