This is a simple sketch i made for a singer-songwriter with whom i never met. He and i live in different countries. i found out about him earlier this year and just fell in love with his voice. But i wasn’t very good at his mother tongue, so i limited myself to only commenting on his Youtube videos at first. Some time later i found out from his blog that he has been internally celebrating every time it is one more month from the day his first Youtube video was uploaded, so i started sending him one fan art every month on that date, with a message to express my support. Any time i sent him something, it would be either a cartoon version of him, or a realistic re-drawing of one of his photos, except this one. i wanted to draw him with a gentle expression snuggling with his cat because that’s how he always seems to me: gentle and kind. It’s scary to write to someone in a language i am not good at. It’s also sometimes discouraging to think that i am sending something while there is no guarantee that the other party sees it. But i always believe that he will see it. And even though he is very shy and there are weeks with no updates from him, i always know that he’s probably stuck somewhere working laboriously on a new song, a new video that he’s very excited to show to his supporters, with a cup of coffee always by the side, while just forgetting the time ticking on by. Meanwhile, i would just keep making sure to listen to every new song, watch every new video, and remember to send him a fan art every month on that date.

It’s his birthday next week, and as messy as i am in his language, i’d do what’s in my power to convey my best wishes to him.
