When I was 13 and I was very insecure about my appearance and almost never got any compliments.

Me and my (then) best friend are sitting and waiting for our bus home when she suddenly turns around, looks at me and says:

"You know what. You are really pretty. I wish I looked like you.. Oh exept for that ugly nose of course."

She smiled and looked away.

My euphoria over my best friends "compliment" suddenly turned in to the biggest insecurity in my life.

I was insecure about my nose for YEARS! I thought I was so ugly and I was ashamed. I wanted to get surgery. It wasn't the only thing she said to me. She called me fat even though I wasn't. But it was always imbedded in some kind of compliment.

The funny thing is that it wasn't even anything wrong with it to begin with. To bad for her I started doing some modeling jobs and moved to a big city and met real friends. She got pregnant with a junkie and lives in the same small town that we grew up in.

Be careful what you say to kids in such a sensitive age.
