The type of extremism that would not allow him to exist as a liberal gay man. He was a hundred times more nuanced and eloquent in his assessments of society than modern-day demagogues and far-right politicians typically are. In 2002, mere days before the Dutch national elections in which he was set to win, Pim Fortuyn was assassinated leaving a TV studio following an interview. He died, aged only 54.
