As someone from the Philippines, I have experienced first-hand interactions with fellow Filipinos. By this, I’m going to list down the behaviors that aren’t so pleasant to the eyes, especially to those who are not familiar with Filipino culture.

  1. Laughing at people who are going through an embarrassing moment.

For instance, a person slipped on the floor, leading into a very awkward position. Some people would choose to make fun of them instead of helping. Relating this to our evolving society, some would go so far as to post it on social media where they call it “meme.”

Filipinos are naturally joyful, but I think this behavior goes beyond.

  1. Crab mentality.

I don’t know why this behavior is still prevalent nowadays when this has become part of student’s discussions in their Values subject in school.

In fact, this has become widespread and we should already know better. But still, some Filipinos are afraid of feeling like a loser that they would choose to step on another's reputation just to make them feel good about themselves.

  1. Owing money.

I am not saying that having a debt makes people less of who they are. However, some Filipinos owe money beyond their financial capacity to pay. They would borrow money in order to celebrate an occasion. They would do this to avoid embarrassment from neighbors or relatives. An example is borrowing money for a grandiose wedding. Additionally, when a relative goes abroad, some Filipinos would automatically think of them as a financial source.

Do note that I’m not generalizing all Filipinos because they are also some of the most hospitable people I have ever known. They are proven to be one of the most approachable people you’ll meet. So I guess some just lack basic discipline for themselves.
