This very much depends on the perfume and how much you love it. It certainly can be - the best perfume I’ve ever tried on was just over £600 a bottle, and exactly mimicked the scent of a fresh peach in a glass of Champagne. It was amazing. (I didn’t buy a bottle.)

I tend to mentally classify expensive perfumes into three groups.

1 - Fashion perfumes. Is a Prada perfume worth the cost, or a Coach perfume, or a Michael Kors perfume, or some expensive celebrity perfume? No, not really. These perfumes are blended by contract perfumers (nothing wrong with that) using standard scent palettes and cheap ingredients. What you’re paying for in that bottle isn’t the juice, it’s the shiny aura of haute couture. True fact: a lot of “fashion” houses make most of their actual profit from perfume, because it’s high-margin, relatively cheap compared to their fashion and leather goods, and aspirational. Unless a perfume in this category smells really good on you, don’t buy it.

2 - unique, old-fashioned and experimental. Is a perfume from one of the classical perfume houses like Grossmith or Guerlain, or a modern company like Amouage, Creed, or Tauer, or from an experimental line like Replica, worth the cost? Possibly, but make no blind buys here, because whether you’re going to find it worthwhile will depend heavily on how it smells on you specifically. It’s depressing to feel equivocal about a £200 bottle of perfume.

3 - mid-range classics. Is a perfume from one of the companies that make mid-range, classical scents out of good ingredients, like Jo Malone, Miller Harris, Penhaligons, or L’Artisan Parfumeur worth the cost? Quite likely yes, honestly. They’re less expensive than the ones in the previous category (about the same price as category 1), but they are put together with better ingredients and more artistry than category 1 - less marketing means more goes in the bottle. These companies are great sources for scents for all occasion. Once again, though, only buy if you like how it smells.

In summary, up to £100, buy from category 3 rather than category 1. Above that, look at category 2, not category 1 (and be wary of category 3 - a higher cost rarely improves the scent in this category, and some, like Jo Malone’s attempts at oudh scents, are awful). More than anything, though, what you need to remember is that perfume is about how the juice smells on your body, not the name on the bottle.

Well, the straightforward answer to your question is that it makes you smell good. The main benefit of a good-quality perfume is its long-lasting scent. It also absorbs body odor caused by sweat. An affordable scent that is priced below 5000 for a whole bottle may be marketed as a perfume. The regular fragrances are deodorants and don’t last too long. The fragrances that claim to last too long don’t smell as elegant. A luxury perfume lasts long while smelling elegant. That’s hard to beat, but it comes with a high price tag.

There are two types of perfumes: EDT and EDP. The main difference between EDT and EDP is the oil concentration. If your mind is set on buying a perfume, you must research what scent you prefer. By rule of thumb, usually, more expensive perfumes have a longer-lasting scent.

• You'll smell amazing, and that's priceless. (Unless you're talking about the kind of perfume that costs more than your rent. Then, maybe you should reconsider your priorities.)

What went through your mind when buying a fragrance?

Because of individual body chemistry, each perfume will smell differently on each woman.

Similarly, how we perceive a perfume varies because of our emotional associations. Certain scents seem “ladylike” because they are marketed to ladylike women or because they were worn by ladylike women we know.

This insight enabled me to sell a bottle of Gloria Vanderbilt’s eponymous fragrance back in the 1980s.

I was working at the cosmetic counter a very large and somewhat upscale pharmacy, and my mother (a round and sweet-faced middle-aged lady) was exploring the many offerings while visiting with me when an elderly gentleman came in. He was looking for a present for his wife.

He looked at our many offerings, working his way down the counter. He was telling us about his dear wife, and the three of us we having a nice chat. Eventually he ended up standing near enough to my mother that he could smell the perfume she was wearing. He politely complimented her, asked the name of her perfume, and did our shop have any?

He bought a great big bottle and the gift set of lotion and powder.

Vanderbilt was launched in 1982. The eighties were a decade of in-your-face glamour and extravagance. Most of the best-selling fragrances were big whites or florientals. Vanderbilt bucked the trend because it was primarily an aldehyde with spicy floral undertones. I think my customer chose it because it was pleasant to his nose and because he quickly associated it with my mother—a sweet, friendly, wifely woman.

I have another theory about perfumes men enjoy when worn by women. I think most men of a certain age had mothers who baked treats for their children. Warm homemade cookies remind us of a mother’s love and care. And vanilla is a ubiquitous ingredient in home baking. It’s also frequently used in modern perfumery. It’s one of the base notes in Vanderbilt.

Subconsciously, my customer was responding to decades-old associations when he decided he liked Vanderbilt.

The gift-giving season is upon us, and many will be considering buying perfume as a gift. With that in mind, here’s my advice for gift-givers:

I think I have a taste that no one else does (well, at least people around me). To be honest, I use perfume not only because of the smell. I wake up every day and I choose how I am going to feel all day with my perfume. Examples:

1. Tom Ford- Black Orchid. I use this when I want to feel like a queen of the world. With this perfume I feel unique, badass and strong, it helps me to stay sane even if my lofe is falling apart to pieces.
2. Santal Cardamome from Fragonard. Before Black Orchid this was my go-to perfume hands down. It is not sweet (sometimes I get sick of sweet perfumes, even though I have bunch of them haha). But it has zero sweetness. I still use it, especially when I feel insecure. It helps me to overcome my fears.
3. Coco Chanel- Mademoiselle. I wouldn’t pick it myself, but it was a gift and I am really glad that I got it. It is really soft, fruity and flowery scent. I think it is quite safe choice for a gift, even though it is expensive. This perfume makes me feel like I am a sweet person, even though I am not like that at all

I own more perfume, but there are the best ones I own. On my wish list is Mugler- Aura, I think this will make it to my top 5

Luxury perfumes tend to have more expensive and rarer ingredients, so you will smell more 'unique', especially if it is a niche luxury fragrance house like Le Labo, Escentric Molecules, or Regime Des Fleurs. They also tend to last longer, expensive ouds for instance, like some Guerlain creations.

Mass produced perfumes usually are alcohol based which some believe is not as good both for your skin and in a perfume; they also smell very generic and can be overly 'sweet' (lots of vanilla notes are common in celebrity fragrances) although there are some great everyday perfumes out there and in the end, it all really depends on personal taste.

Perfume is extremely subjective to one's own nose and the memories certain smells evoke.

They’re worth it if you want those perfumes.

Perfumes which are not expensive, generally:

• Won’t contain natural ingredients.
• natural ingredients smell more complex, more unusual and richer - is that worth it to you?
• Won’t be as daring and sophisticated in their composition
• many niche fragrances sell in small numbers to people with very refined noses. They are often perceived as ‘too out-there’ for large numbers of people. Where a cheap fragrance will have to sell in large numbers to be successful, an expensive fragrance can be sold in lesser numbers and still make a profit. So you can find things which are far more particular, unusual, exceptional etc.

Have you ever tasted a very expensive bottle of wine? It’s a roughly similar comparison. It’s worth it if you want to access levels of aesthetic which are impossible to achieve for less money.

If you don’t, it’s not worth it.

In my experience, when you wear a fragrance which is a couple of tiers above the generic designer stuff, people know the difference and comment on it.

If you are curious to try some good quality fragrances** that are not too mainstream, here are a few of my personal favorites:

• Bottega Veneta:

• Notes: Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Jasmine, Leather, Patchouli, Oakmoss.
• Very stylish perfume from a house that specializes in high end leather accessories. This is the nicest smelling leather I have ever found in a perfume. Also my signature scent.
• Prada Infusion d’Iris:

• Notes: Mandarin, Neroli, Iris, Cedar, Benzoin
• This is a reformulation of the original version. Sophisticated but also very light. Don’t expect to have an aura of fragrance around you, but rather to sense it close to your skin for your personal enjoyment. Makes me feel like a diva each time I wear it.
• Balenciaga L’Essence:

• Notes: Violet leaf, Violet, Cedar, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vetiver.
• A flanker of Balenciaga Paris, L’Essence is much smoother and better composed in my opinion. Probably the first green perfume that I became fond of, I find it enchanting like a dark, green forest taken straight out of a fairy tale. I loved it in Spring, hope to enjoy it just as much in Autumn.

Honorable mentions:

• Guerlain Insolence: Famous enough. Violet, Berries, Sandalwood and Tonka, yum! A gourmand beauty like this is more suitable for cold weather.
• Bottega Veneta Eau Sensuelle: A formulation worthy of attention. It is fruitier and more seductive than the original Bottega Veneta, it also has a gourmand quality that can make it appealing to those who like trendy fragrances.
• Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet: Cute, clean and uplifting. I imagine it must be successful in the Asian market, where women usually wear light floral perfumes.
• Givenchy Dahlia Noir EDT: Rose and powder, very well behaved. I like it very much. Some might find it sharp and disappointingly tame compared to the much sweeter EDP, I think it is more elegant and shows good taste.

** to me, a good quality perfume means: high quality ingredients, good composition, non-alcoholic smell. Sillage is not a criterion. Duration should be 6 hours minimum in order to please me.

Often I find that perfumes that contain berries, pomegranate, pear, or plum as top notes tend to be pungent and unpleasant in the opening. I think it takes a very crafty perfumer to really pull this off without making the composition smell cheap.

I also think that a good quality perfume is worth purchasing even if it is expensive. Save up and you won’t be sorry! Just make sure you preserve it properly!

Perfume is so individual and reacts so differently to different people’s biochemistry, how the heck can this answer actually narrow down to names of specific brands?!

Personally, I have almost no sense of smell, I do wear perfumed deodorant, but that’s not perfume. I own a couple of perfumes, but I never think to put them on.
