I was in my mid-30s. One day I went into a coffee shop to grab a cup before a meeting with a client. There was a very nice young woman taking orders and working the register. She was nice enough and efficient and kept the line moving. I wasn't thinking about how old she was, just that she was roughly in my peer group.

I got to the front of the line and as I told her what I wanted, she really brightened and, smiling beguilingly, said “are you Gary?”

I had to admit that I wasn't. She apologized and told me that I looked like one of her dad's friends.
