I can tell you why my two sons who graduated high school in 2009 and 2010 decided to attend college.

They had worked several summers as either camp counselors or as labors for our town’s department of public works. They saw the types of jobs that one could get with Merely a high school diploma. They saw laborers making $25,000 per year, hoping to make it to $40,000 per year after many years of work.

They also realized that a high school education was merely a Foundation for more learning, whether it was in college, trade school, or an apprenticeship (which includes the military).

They sat down with us during their senior year in high school and determined that together (parents and them) we could afford to spend $140,000 for each of them to attend four years of college and to pursue a major that would launch them into a career that they believed they wanted. NOTE: In the end the cost escalated to $160,000 per son per bachelor degree, because costs Increase and there are Hidden costs that one does not realize until one starts college.

They each finished college with $18,000 in Federal Direct loans (that we agreed upon before they started college) and they each got jobs with a Starting annual salary of Greater than $60,000 per year. They both have been working in their chosen career fields and Love their work. And they each have paid off their student loans in under five years.

What more could one have for reasons to attend college?

There are similar reasons for going to Trade Schools or to an Apprenticeship after high school. You have to do what is best for You.

You asked, “What is the best decision for a student?”

There is not one, but many. It’s like asking what is the most important organ in the human body?

In no particular order, a few top ones are.

  1. Having a worthy and reachable goal. If your goals are not motivating you to act, you need new goals.
  2. Having an understanding and thus an appreciation of how the lessons can and will be used to support your goals, hopes, and dreams beyond school.

  4. Consulting on a regular basis and listening to your Board of Directors. It is invisible to the students which students are seeking and receiving wise counsel from their boards, but to the trained eye, it is obvious who is listening. Your board will help you with charting your course, making course corrections, and weathering inevitable storms. Students who listen to their boards, endure few storms and often get a little extra wind put into their sails.
  5. Listening to the right voices. The most expensive thing that you can ever do is to listen to the wrong voices.
  6. Focusing so much on important things that there is not time for you to engage in unimportant things.
  7. Preparing yourself for your future. A key element of Success is proper preparation. And consequently, a key element of Failure is the lack of proper preparation.
  8. Showing up early.
  9. Looking for the good in everything, and
  10. Knowing when to let go of something and move on.

Your Board of Directors is comprised of those who love you and who want to see you be the best that you can be. Call an adult-level meeting with your board, listen more than you talk, and leave every board meeting with two things: action items and the date for the next board meeting.

You asked, “What are some factors that should be considered when ranking colleges or programs to help students make informed decisions about their education?”

It is best to start with the end in mind. College is not where one goes to find himself or herself. College is where one goes to get the specific training and certification to be gainfully employed in a specific professional area.

Ask them where you could get the training that is needed to become one of them. Ask people who employ Xs, “Where do you get your best Xs?” Then go to those places and ask, “What do I need to be to be considered to be a good candidate to get my training here?”

If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there and you won’t like it when you arrive.

People do not wander around aimlessly and then end up in a good place.

It starts with having a worthy goal, getting on the right path to that goal, staying Focused on the goal as you traverse the arduous path to your worthy goal, and having the right resources with you or available along the path.

The way the US public educational system is set up is for the local school district to provide the state mandated curriculum to all of its residents by using primarily local property taxes.

That is a big pool of money to handle a wide range of educational needs for the local population. Some students need more services, and most need less services, but overall everybody gets what is required. It is kind of an insurance policy.

Because local property taxes vary greatly from district to district, the individual districts spend different rates per student ranging from $5,000 USD per student in lower income areas to upwards of $15,000 per student USD (or even more) in the more affluent communities.

So, say you want to use “school choice” from a $5,000 per student district into a $15,000 district… Who covers the $10,000 difference?

With school choice, the home district is only required to transfer their original “fair share” of $5,000. The chosen district does receive any taxes from the student, so it is the responsibility of the student to pay the remaining amount.

Odds are that family cannot pay the $10,000 since they are in a lower income community.

Also what if the student required a lot of extra services above and beyond the $10,000 even if the parents can pay it? The chosen school district can reject the student if it costs to much to provide an education. The same is true for disruptive students. Or if the chosen district has achieved maximum enrollment.

The chosen school district is under no obligation to accept out-of-district students.

By implementing school choice, school districts are the ones who get to choose who their students are and not the parents.

Secondly, I think Chinese juveniles are naiver than their counterparts in west countries, which explains why there are so many college students play their computer games all day, and protest almost every decisions their college has made. I know that these kind of students exist in every countries in the world, but what the main point is that the amount and scale in Chinese students is much higher.

So, many young people go to college just because everyone goes there, however, they don’t know what they want to do in the future and what their dreams are. They just spend every single day like a zombie.

Of course, there are still some students who have a clear mind towards what is going on around their environments and in the world, who are the future of China. But the most, are just doing what everyone does.

Or if that is too much, ask them for an informational interview, where you can ask them about their experience and activities.

For many tests it's just a scan tron and the grader is looking for anomalies not actually scoring an exam.

However, generally speaking, AI-powered essay writing services use natural language processing and machine learning algorithms to assist students in generating essays, research papers, or other academic content.

The typical process involves inputting the essay topic or requirements, and the AI generates a draft or suggestions based on the given input. It can help with grammar, sentence structure, and even provide content ideas. However, it's essential for students to use such services responsibly and not rely solely on AI for their academic work.

Usually there are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of schools that provide good educations in whatever field interests you. Choosing one of those will usually lead to a better education than just enrolling in the most convenient school. The best for you may not be one of those with glamorous reputations.
