Well it's not really about make/model recommendations. Consider the following criteria and do some research.

  1. Look for a naturally asperated 4-cylinder. No tubo. Also research an engine that will NOT crash the valves if the timing belt breaks or slips.
  2. Avoid wheels 18" or larger
  3. Keep to normal transmissions. Avoid DST and CVT versions.
  4. Avoid AWD systems keep to FWD. For a car it doesn't help enough to justify the expense.
  5. Look to website self fix it demonstrations to see how difficult repairs are done. To change the battery is a simple job or is it buried under several other parts. Same for air filters, alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, accessory belt.
  6. Also look for common cars, avoid niche cars built in limited quantities.
  7. When you find a car that meets the above criteria and your budget it most likely be a rather unexceptional car, but will move you from point A to B with the least drama.
