Let me share my personal experience on this.

I was travelling from Lucknow to Vapi on 6th of November of this year only. Due to the festive season, I got the RAC ticket. It was a 25 hour long journey.

RAC stands for reservation against cancellation. You have to share your seat with another person.

Approximately at 2:15 AM, the train stopped at the Mathura Jn. At where around 15–20 men and women boarded the train.

None of them had any tickets with them and they started abusing and harrasing the passengers to adjust with them.(they were also carrying a ton of luggage)

After they crossed the limit, I got furious and tweeted the incident at 2:38 AM.

Within 4 minutes I got a reply from the Rail Ministry India and they asked my mobile number to register a complaint.

After registering the complaint, the train was stopped their for like an hour in which all the TTs came and started taking actions.

After that at Kota jn, the RPF made many of them to deboard the train and I got the message that my complaint has been closed.

Some officials also came to me in the morning for enquiry and asked for some general imformation.

I am quite satisfied with the efforts of Indian railways in the direction of passenger's safety. Also imagine I tweeted at 2:38 midnight. Please my grammatical mistakes.

I use to read all the people reviews about indian railways solving the problem in twitter and quora. With so much of curiosity I was like. Let me give a try.

So the day has arrived finally.

We were travelling from Chennai to Mumbai (22158)

Route for this train from Chennai-Andhra Pradesh-Mumbai.

All the Local people of Andhra Pradhesh started to board as they all had unreserved tickets. We dint sleep before boarding the train. So my wife was sleeping there were so much of noise and mess. She woke up and started to ask the people who was standing “do you have tickets of reservations” he said who are you to ask (*in my kind: Valid Question 😜)my wife was kept on arguing. Then the TTE came and we explained the situation he dint bother and he went away. These ppl were sleeping in others seats like it is their own seat. While arguing he said im a police officer I know the rules and regulations. But the TTE asked that man to leave the place but his wife was sleeping.

So my wife was like 😡. I want to lodge the complaint now. And the king arrived Railmadad (

We lodged the complaint with all the details.

We received the SMS.

We lodged the complaint at 5:51 and at 6:04 the TTE came and asked the seat numbers of ours and he asked did you lodged the complaint we said Yes. You dint solve the complaint of us. He was getting call one by one from his higher officers. Then he vacated them. TTE statement was “You guys travel for one day I have to travel daily they will kill me”. That’s why at first I dint say anything.

After that everyone in the coach were looking at us like this 😳.

This issue was solved while the train was running.

YES, Indian railway has improved so much.

Safety of all passengers in Indian Railways is an issue of the utmost importance for Government. Therefore, we have made safety the number one priority. During the first few weeks in office there has been a comprehensive review of safety undertaken to understand the short comings of the Indian railways. The outcome of the review brought forth a number of immediate measures that must be taken to address key issues such as Unmanned Level Crossing and Derailments. Here’s how the Government is working towards the welfare and security of every commuter.

TRACK SAFETY

Track safety is the number one priority for The Railways. Some of the issues related to unmanned level crossings have been addressed for a safer commute are -

• 34% of all accidents in 2016-17 were a result of unmanned level crossings
• Using transformative mantra of “Speed, Skill and Scale” the target to eliminate these been expedited from the earlier one of 2019
• Overriding priority for granting maintenance blocks. Blocks in September are up by 13% compared to last year
• Track replacement/renewal to be accorded the highest priority
• The Ministry will procure seven lakh tonne of rail, from open market to meet the shortfall of rail for new lines, gauge conversion and doubling

Another major safety issue hampering the growth of the Indian railways is derailments, due to defects in tracks along with other issues.

• Derailments are attributed to a number of factors including engineering mistakes, carriage/wagon defects and staff error
• It has therefore been the ministry’s priority to focus on track replacement/renewal
• The construction of new tracks should be diverted to places/stretches which are prone to accidents and where replacement is due

Another priority for the Ministry is the procurement of new rails on a large scale with a target to complete all new lines on time. This is vital to improving safety as older tracks must be phased out to prevent derailments and improve efficiency.

HIGHEST PASSENGER PRIORITY WITH LHB COACHES

It is also decided that the manufacturing of conventional ICF design coaches should be stopped & new design LHB coaches only should be manufactured. ICF coaches have been in service for around 50 years now and are considered to be outdated.

TRANSFORMING THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

The Government is investing in technology to make sure that the way people commute changes and become more comfortable and safer. Following are some steps we have taken -

• Ramping up electronic interlock of signals in place of manual interlocking
• Within few months, CCTV cameras will be installed in all suburban trains in Mumbai with monitoring mechanism. This shall be done in parallel across India as well.

EFFICIENCY IN RAILWAYS

We, at Ministry of Railways, believe that employee efficiency leads to comfortable and safer journey of the commuters. Keeping the same in mind we have made the following changes in the way our employees work.

• Five-member committee of senior officials of Railways to improve safety of staff and workers working on railway work-sites mainly tracks
• Report of Mumbai suburban audit covering each suburban station received. Key recommendations include Provision of new FOBs (Foot Over Bridges) and widening/replacement of existing FOBs, escalators, additional entry/exit points of landings etc. Zonal railways preparing action plans
• Fresh time table, which will have specific blocks of maintenance, to be prepared and launched soon. Efficiency gained from this initiative will improve the speed and safety.

EMPLOYEE EMPOWERMENT

Empowerment of GMs, DRMs and field officials of Indian Railways will lead to fast track decision making, execution and overall working of Railways. Here are some steps we have taken towards steady and systematic transformation of Railways.

• Delegation of unlimited financial and administrational powers for safety to field unit GMs of zones for next 18 months
• Posts of Additional Divisional Railway Managers being increased in all the railway division offices for improving operational efficiency.
• 200 officers to be relocated from Head Quarters as in field to strengthen ground operations and project implementation.
• Tremendous stress on field inspections by officers
• Staff being used in residences of officers etc. has been reposted to departments including track safety. About 8,000 such staff has already rejoined their posts

Along with all the other decisions following are some other steps taken for passenger safety -

• Treat platforms and pathways on platform as safety items with no budget restriction
• Pre-painted rails to reduce rusting of rails while saving Rs. 1,500 crores
• Additional escalators at all high use stations across India

Lastly, Indian Railways have striven to establish a ‘zero accident’ railway system, and it has significantly brought down the number of fatalities under this Government. However, every life is precious and each life lost is one too many.

We believe that this is just the beginning in changing the mind set regarding safety. It is and will always be our priority, and we are fully committed to making your journey safe and comfortable.

A female passenger was travelling from Anand Vihar Terminal to Raxaul on berth number 11 in B-1 coach of Sadbhavna Express (train number 14018). She felt uncomfortable during this traveling.

The railway app sent the message to the TC office at Chhapra railway station through the control room. The TC present there, Pratima Kumari, without any hesitation, understood the need of the female passenger and sent her colleague to the market to get sanitary pads.

She was trying to contact the railways for assistance. When the problem intensified as the train approached Ballia, she demanded sanitary pads using the Rail Madad app. The railway app routed the message to the TC office at Chhapra train station via the control room. Pratima Kumari, the TC present, immediately recognized the female passenger's need and sent a colleague to the store to obtain sanitary pads

When the train reached Chhapra junction, Pratima Kumari herself went to platform number three and made the pad available on the seat of the female passenger and also enquired about her well-being.

The woman not only thanked the railway for this help, but also paid the price of the pads.

In the morning when i saw the Dirty tray i tweeted about it and immediately after 10 minutes one Cleaning staff came and ask Sir did you Complaint about something

I said yes.

And than he cleaned the Tray.

After that A call received from Railway staff for Feedback.

The guidelines include action plan, preventive measures, sensitization, surveillance over the identified vulnerable area, notice for passengers and special measures.

Guidelines also advise Zonal Railways and Production Units that acting proactively they may implement various other mechanisms to ensure safety of women depending upon local conditions and circumstances.

Preventive measures to be adopted:

1. Proper lighting arrangements should be ensured covering all vulnerable places identified in Railway Stations, Circulating area, Parking, FOBs, approach roads, ends of platforms, Yards, Washing lines, DEMU / EMU Car sheds, Saloon Sidings, Maintenance depots, etc.
2. Abandoned structures in platforms/yards, abandoned quarters, buildings at isolated places which remain unguarded/ unattended should be demolished immediately in consultation with engineering department. Till such time that they are demolished, they should be regularly checked as part of the beat of on duty staff especially during night time or period when the presence of people is minimal.
3. Unauthorized entries/ exits should be closed.
4. Yards / pits/ nearby railway area of stations must be kept clean of unwanted vegetation which may provide cover for concealment. View cutters such as these may offer opportunity to offenders to commit crime.
5. Waiting rooms should not remain unattended and persons should be allowed to enter the waiting rooms after proper entry, particularly in nights and at times when there is minimum presence of passengers. It should be cross checked by the duty officer at odd hours.
6. Proper Police Verification and Identity Cards of staff engaged on contractual basis engaged in services related to passengers should be ensured as per SOP & GCC. No staff without Identity Cards may be allowed in trains and railway premises.
7. No unauthorized person may be allowed to move in Yard and coaching depots where the coaches are stabled. There should be controlled entry system.
8. Before the empty rakes are moved to washing lines, it should be ensured that the coaches have been checked properly by the C&W and Electrical staff and locked. The condemned coaches kept in yards/ sick lines must be kept locked and checked from time to time.
9. After cleaning & other activities pertaining to maintenance of coaches, again it should be checked properly and locked in the washing line and brought to the platform in locked condition.
10. Proper basic security arrangement should be ensured in coaching yards & depots.

11. Surveillance system should also be enforced in coaching depots & yards.

12. Encroachments particularly in/ near passenger area should be removed on priority following legal process and unauthorized entries to railway premises should be closed.

13. Railway is providing free internet services to the passengers. It should be ensured in coordination with the service providers that the porn sites are not accessible through this service.

14. Unwanted /Unauthorized persons in the railway premises should be rounded and prosecuted and railway station, yards & trains should be kept free from unwanted 8s unsocial elements.

15. Special drives may be launched to apprehend and prosecute persons consuming alcohol in railway stations and trains

16. Exemplary action should be taken against railway staff involved in such offences.

17. The cases of crime against women must be followed up till their logical conclusion.

India is one of the most dangerous countries for women, both its own and others.

Keeping that in mind, if you dare to travel in India by train, here are my two cents on staying safe on the ride.

1. Pick the reserved compartment in any train. First/second AC is the safest option.
2. NEVER EVER BUY/EAT ANYTHING FROM ANYONE, NOT EVEN WATER, ON THE TRAIN. Sexual predators spike food and drinks, one of the oldest tricks in their book.
3. Avoid sharing any personal details of yourself or loved ones. Refrain from small talk.
4. Be situationally aware at all times. Plugging into your phone to listen to music or podcasts can be done once you have comfortably settled into your seat.
5. While making a bathroom visit, have a woman, preferably older, accompany you. Many women get sexually assaulted inside toilets, unfortunately. Carry a self protection device at all times.
6. Avoid carrying expensive tech/ jewelry, if possible. Learn to camouflage it well if you cannot avoid it.
7. Have a surly/curt expression on your face in India, in general. Friendly, smiling women are seen as easy in this part of the world.
8. Note down the Railway Protection Force (RPF) contact details, if you need to report any unfortunate incident.

Despite all this, avoid train rides in India as it is not safe. Flying is safer.

Depending on the travelling area. Southern part of the country employees loyal to government.

Southern part means South central railway( covers andhra Telangana ) southern railway. (Tamilnadu and Kerala ) western railway ( Maharashtra) south western railway ( karnataka)

These parts of the country railway 100 percent safe.

Other parts can't speak about it.

From Top most administration to lower most cadre work hard and genuinely more than 50 percent staff they take responsibility than require to take because they cover remaining employees responsibility also.

Some people work hard for loyalty and some people for awards and fame in the department. Any both working for good only.

Officers always on surprise check very common in night time and any violation of rules in these railway zones very DAR action so mostly safety work for railway day and night no need to worry.

Even any regularity is train will but not train won't be any accident.

A year ago I was travelling from Kolkata to Bangalore for a summer internship. A week prior to my travel the unfortunate Balasore rail accident had occurred and the service was temporarily disrupted as the trains of that route were cancelled. This resulted in trains being overcrowded for the next few days.

I had a reservation in the sleeper class and the journey spanned for two nights and a day. Sixteen hours into the journey, I had a verbal argument with an unreserved passenger who wanted me to lift my middle berth to accomodate him. I refused saying that it's not the sleeping hours and it'll be uncomfortable for people to sit in the lower berth. A few hours later I had to get down at Vijayawada station to use the toilet of another compartment because unreserved passengers in my compartment had blocked the way and they were not allowing others to use the toilets. At night when the train crossed Thirupati and most passengers were asleep, I saw two men lighting cigarettes. Now I have a problem with the smell as it's very suffocating so I asked them to stop smoking in the compartment. To this, they started jeering in their language and made vulgar gestures with their fingers. It was a solo traveller’s nightmare. I turned away but these men kept taunting me in their broken english saying how they'll do certain things to me. I was scared out of my wits.

I dialled 139 on my phone and and, after a entering a few numbers and my PNR, was connected to an operator at the call center. I explained him my situation. From that point onwards till my complaint was forwarded to the Tenali RPF division, this man stayed on the phone with me constantly providing with the reassurance and support that I required. When those passengers passively enquired whether I was sleeping or not, I was on the verge of tears while on the phone with that operator and he asked me to hold myself together as Tenali was only fifteen kilometres and it'll be taken care of as soon as the train stops there. The call went on for fifteen minutes before it was shifted to Tenali RPF where I narrated my situation again and they assured that help was on the way. At the station a lady RPF personnel came by the window to talk to me. I pointed the two men to her and she berated them in her tongue, so much that people of the adjacent cabins were awakened by her voice. She told me that the TTE will arrive shortly and I should inform him as he'll collect the fine, for the committing the offense, from them. The TTE did come after half an hour but I didn't tell him anything because I was exhausted by then and didn't want another drama. Thankfully nothing happened for the rest of the night, I guess the lady personnel sent her message strong and clear.

So, this was my story. I haven't stopped traveling with the Indian Railways because the train journeys are fun and the railway service staff always ensured me a comfortable and safe journey.

Ensure that information about this helpline is prominently displayed in train compartments and stations. Additionally, improve communication facilities, including announcements and displays, to keep passengers informed about safety measures.
5. Undercover Female Police Officers:Deploy plainclothes female police officers on trains to monitor and address any issues discreetly. This can help in identifying and apprehending potential harassers without causing panic among passengers.
6. Public Awareness Campaigns:Conduct regular awareness campaigns on the importance of passenger safety, including educating passengers on reporting incidents of harassment and the available support mechanisms.
7. Integration with Mobile Apps:Integrate safety features into mobile apps associated with train bookings. This could include panic buttons, location-sharing options, and real-time reporting features to enable passengers to seek help in case of emergencies.
8. Improved Lighting and Visibility:Ensure proper lighting in train compartments, especially during night journeys. Well-lit areas can discourage criminal activities and create a safer environment for passengers.
9. Regular Training for Staff:Provide regular training to railway staff, including train attendants and security personnel, on handling and responding to cases of harassment or assault. This includes sensitivity training to ensure that complaints are handled with empathy and urgency.
10. Collaboration with Local Law Enforcement:Establish strong collaboration between Indian Railways and local law enforcement agencies. This includes coordination for patrolling, quick response to distress calls, and joint initiatives to address safety concerns.

It's crucial for Indian Railways to adopt a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach that combines preventive measures, quick response mechanisms, and ongoing awareness efforts to ensure the safety of women passengers during night journeys. Additionally, regular feedback from passengers and periodic assessments of safety measures can help in making continuous improvements.

This answer is about my own journey in the Indian railways. So, i was traveling from Saharanpur to New Delhi with my brother in the unreserved class. The incidents happened when i was buying my ticket and i had already kept a 500 rupees note in my pocket seperately so when i gave the money to the booking clerk he said “you just gave me a 20 rupees note".

First of all i was confused and then i argued. But the booking clerk didn't confess and i was getting late so i gave up and went on to board my train. I lost all hope. Its not about losing a little or more money its about being scammed.

I couldn't calm my mind knowing the fact i began my journey being scammed. I tried putting my mind elsewhere but found myself trying to find out how to complain about it. I actually had no hope that someone would even respond, it was just an effort for the peace of my mind.

And so i registered my complain. And to my surprise my complaint got a confirmation and within 20 minutes i received a formal call from the Complaint department and PAWAN YADAV the officer thoroughly listened to my complain and assured me satisfaction. He called me again in 10 minutes and asked my ticket number and time i bought it. And again 10 minutes later he told me that the booking clerk will be in touch with you soon.

The Booking Clerk then called me and tried to clear himself how 480 rupees were not cleared due to haste and apologized for the inconvenience stating i got confused with money. He then on being insisted by the complain department transferred money at the same time to my account.

I hope this expresses well how effective is the Indian railways.

I hope you're not expecting women to wear protective gears in India are you? The solution is simple, Just reduce the number of people riding the public transport in India as this reduces the chaos which is usually encountered in the Indian public transport system.Put a limit on number of passengers per bus and increase the number of CNG buses and same thing can be said about the trains especially in Mumbai and other chaotic cities.When it comes to public areas and some pervy dude(doesn't matter how old he is) does some shit to you,just shout and people around you will gather or call the cops(I just don't trust Indian cops).I know many people had initiated various media campaigns,large scale protests etc for the rights of women and asking people to stop harassing women for such a long time that it became a cliche these days.The government should implement stricter laws to everyone including the people who are affiliated with the government bureaucracy and I don't mean Sharia law which is a big no no or lokpal bill which appears quite skeptical, I meant something which is pro-democratic and pro-civilian.

1. There is no such system any where in the world.
2. Yr Q is filthy / lunatic. millions travel by train in mUmbai only. U want each passenger to be checked? Are U really sane? ( NOTE there were 6 or 7 bomb explosions in Mumbai train on single day). Six trains departing Madras experienced bomb explosions on Babri Masjid demolition day. Do U expect Railway to search each passenger travelling by 2000 departures from Mumbai/ Chenna/ Kolkatta/ Bangalore? Are U really sane?
3. Why Ur majesty restrict yr mercy to train? Those who travel by bus - are they NOT humans? they must also be checked! millions travel by buses. Is this possible?
4. Accidents- if if if if at all U understand English- are accidental. They will continue to happen in India/ Japan/ USA/ UK. And Ur surmise that Signalling staff ONLY are responsible for accidents is WRONG.

Merits:

4. Reduced Harassment: Separating men and women may reduce the likelihood of harassment or inappropriate behavior on public transportation.
5. Increased Ridership: Some women may be more inclined to use public transportation if they feel safe and comfortable in gender-segregated compartments, potentially increasing overall ridership.

Demerits:

1. Gender Equality: Gender segregation can be seen as discriminatory and a violation of the principles of gender equality and individual rights. It assumes that men and women cannot coexist peacefully in the same compartment, which may not always be the case.
2. Inconvenience: Gender segregation can be inconvenient for families, couples, or groups traveling together who would prefer to stay in the same compartment.
3. Limited Space: Reserving separate compartments for men and women can reduce the overall seating capacity, leading to potential overcrowding or difficulty in booking tickets.
4. Administrative Challenges: Implementing and enforcing gender segregation policies can be administratively challenging and may require additional resources.
5. Perpetuating Stereotypes: Gender segregation can perpetuate stereotypes and reinforce the idea that men and women cannot interact or coexist without issues, which may not be accurate for all individuals.

You have to think in a mature way, your thinking is very childish. Only the AC compartments are unsafe for women or for families, everywhere unsafe conditions are always there. How you are safely traveling from one place is most important, all places and all men are not the same, in the world some places and few men are dangerous. Be alert and be cautious during the journey.

AC compartments only disallowed means all train compartments must be disallowed. The best thing is that women's bodies should be covered with 10mts of cloth to avoid any interactions with men.

Yes it is changing.

I will give you a small incident that took place. I was travelling from berhampore to kolkata in hazarduari express. On my way to kolkata,in krishnanagar station, i saw railway cleaning staff entering the train and cleaning all sorts of things lying on the train floor and after a while i saw another railway employee spraying air freshners under the seats. This incident was a bit shock to me as i never saw that before in trains. Earlier there were all types of rubbish on the floor and no one to care till the train had reached the final destination.

Another change i noticed was when i was returning to berhampore from kolkata. I had booked my seat on irctc and they had my number. After the train had left the station and had travelled for half an hour, i got a call from the indian railways to give my feedback about the cleanness of the train, the time when the train started etc. This was yet another change i saw in the railways.

So according to me, indian railway is changing. I greatly appretite the work done by the government to improve it.

Safety is accorded the highest priority by Indian Railways and all possible steps are undertaken on a continual basis to prevent accidents and to enhance safety. These include timely replacement of over-aged assets, adoption of suitable technologies for upgradation and maintenance of track, rolling stock, signaling and interlocking systems, safety drives, greater emphasis on training of officials and safety inspections at regular intervals to monitor and educate staff for observance of safe practices.

Policing on Railways being a State subject, prevention of crime, registration of cases, their investigation and maintenance of law & order in Railway premises as well as on running trains is the statutory responsibility of the State Governments, which they discharge through Government Railway Police (GRP)/District Police. However, Railway Protection Force (RPF) supplements the efforts of GRP to provide better protection and security of passenger area & passengers and for matters connected therewith.

Besides, the efforts of GRP, following steps have been taken by the Railways to prevent crime incidents and to ensure secure journey of passengers in trains:-

1. On vulnerable and identified routes/sections, 2500 trains (on an average) are escorted by Railway Protection Force daily, in addition to 2200 trains escorted by Government Railway Police of different States daily.
2. Surveillance is kept through CCTV cameras to ensure safety and security of passengers. At present, CCTV cameras are provided at 436 stations over Indian Railways.
3. Security Help Line number 182 is operational over Indian Railways for round the clock security related assistance to passengers in distress. It is being upgraded.
4. An Integrated Security System (ISS) consisting of surveillance of vulnerable stations through Close Circuit Television Camera Network, Access Control etc. has been sanctioned to improve surveillance mechanism over 202 Railway stations.
5. Frequent announcements are made through Public Address System to educate passengers to take precautions against theft, snatching, drugging etc.
6. Through various social media platforms viz. Twitter, Facebook etc., Railways are in regular touch with passengers including women passengers to enhance security of passengers and to address their security concern.
7. Drives are conducted from time to time against the entry of unauthorized persons in trains and railway premises.
8. Regular coordination is made with the State Police/GRP authorities at all levels for prevention of crime, registration of cases, their investigation and maintenance of law & order in Railway premises as well as on running trains.

Consequential train accidents have come down from 104 in 2016-17 to 73 in 2017-18.

1. Proliferation of LHB Coach conversion From ICF to LHB German technology which is more safer (at the time of derailment LHB don't overlap over each other like ICF) than ICF and have quite good operational speed.
2. Train Protection & Warning System (TPWS) - Train Protection & Warning System (TPWS) mitigates safety risk of accidents/collisions due to loco pilot’s error of Signal Passing at Danger or over speeding. It is a proven Europeantrain protection technology and deployed extensively on World Railways.
3. Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) - TCAS is a developmental project being taken on a limited section of Lingamapalli – Vikarabad – Wadi - Bidar section (250 km) on South Central Railway. Operational deployment of TCAS on Railways on Absolute Block Signalling sections will be taken-up after successful conclusion of the extended field trials and safety certification of system by Independent Safety Assessor (ISA).
4. Tracks Improvement :-Railway tracks are replaced through track renewal works which is an ongoing process. Track renewal works are undertaken as and when stretch of track becomes due for renewal on the basis of criteria laid down in Indian Railway Permanent Way Manual on age cum condition basis viz. traffic carried in terms of gross million tonnes & incidence of rail fracture/failure, wear of rails, and maintainability of track as per standards etc.
5. improving Signaling: It mainly includes complete track circulation,Axle Counter for Automatic clearance of Block Section (BPAC) to ensure complete arrival of train before granting line clear and to reduce human element have been provided on 4935 block sections. TPWS and TCAS are part of it.
6. UMLC (unmanned level crossings):Topmost priority for eliminating UMLC gates in a time bound manner up to December 2018 and deployment of Gate Mitra for the interim period.

Yes, It is, and for the betterment of passengers.

While I was travelling in the “SAMPARKRANTHI EXPRESS” , I realised that there were no dustbins in the sleeper coach. I decided to rake up this to the Indian Railways and provided the below Suggestion/Feedback through their Web Portal.

And here to my surprise, After Few days, this is the resolution i received.

They Installed the dustbins on the interconnections of the train as in other trains also.

Slowly, But Yes, It is changing.

If you faced any such kind of problem , please bring it to the Railways instead of just going through it.

Yes, Indian Railways invests in safety. The Indian Railways has announced plans to invest in new technologies to boost passenger safety and reduce dependence on manual systems, following a recent spate of train accidents in Kanpur. As part of the plans, new equipment will be purchased to enable quick detection of fracture on rail tracks.

The commuters of Indian Railways are entitled to safe, sufficient, affordable and accessible journeys. Access to scanning machines, alcohol detection devices and CCTV cameras and anti-Collusion machines should no longer be seen as a service, but as Human Rights, guaranteed to each and every person in India.

Their are multiple initiatives taken such as

Installation of cctv cameras in buses.:-when you travel in dtc buses, many buses are having cctv cameras in them, but some old cluster bus(orange bus) are not having it but their contract soon over.

Deployment of martials in buses. In each and evry bus their would be one personal specially for women safety, even I had seen this whenever a woman is uncomfortable by any comment or anything she didn't like she silently go to the martial and tell this thing after some time the martial took action by forcing the man to deboard the bus and also ensure not to take name of any women.

Online apps such as himmat app of delhi police which is used when any cab driver took another route or misbehave, a woman can directly contact to this app and her location would be track and police will arrive at an earliest.

Moreover in railways there are certain laws such as if a women travel without ticket at night no one will ask her to deboard, she have to give some fine and continue journey, moreover there are certain apps to called rpf in the train.

Moreover government are giving training to some women who volunteers themselves to accompany a girl and drop her to home especially at night time.

This is all i remember but there are more initiatives, the only challenge is lack of awareness.

In India, Train journeys in general have become very comfortable and uncomplicated. The govt has developed various services for travelers to stay connected with railway administration. In fact, the twitter handle Ministry of Railways (@RailMinIndia) is buzzing and live for any complaints and suggestions.

There has been a huge rise in solo backpackers travelling across India and a good chunk of them are female travelers. This is surely a sign of women feeling safe and comfortable while travelling across India.

Recently, there are guards deployed in trains during evening hours especially in women only compartments.. There is an active helpline number also available. ( You will find it on the above twitter page)

In the end it comes down to being alert and knowing your surroundings. Each person has to take care of their own belongings and be safe.

Recently, I happened to be at Pratapnagar Workshop of Indian Railway in Vadodara. I found that old coaches are being modified to isolation coaches. Just look at the image below:

There were some 20–25 coaches being converted to isolation coaches. The changes being done are:

1. The coaches are selected which are 20–25 years old. They will be condemned after they are used as isolation coaches.
2. The sleeper coaches are selected for conversion.
3. Middle births are removed from all the compartments.
4. Separate dustbins are provided in all the compartments. A compartment in sleeper coach meant those 6 + 2 seats.
5. Thick transparent Plastic sheets are used to further separate the compartments from one another.
6. One of the toilet is converted into bathroom with shower in each coach.
7. As you can see in the figure also that thick mosquito net is screwed in the windows.
8. A Power point is provided in each of the compartment.

Indian Railway is very proactive in fighting against COVID-19 virus. There are so many other initiatives Indian Railways is taking to fight COVID-19.

Steps taken earlier/to be taken :

• Slowly, IR, is replacing ICF coaches (ICF Bogie - Wikipedia) to LHB (Train Stuff in India). This is gonna take some 10–15 years more to replace all the remaining ICF coaches. This certainly helps in reducing casualties in rail accidents.
• Recently, a team of Japanese engineers is going to visit IR. (Japanese railway safety experts team on India visit )
• Trains like Humsafar express have CCTV surveillance and smoke alarm system in coaches. (Humsafar Express - Wikipedia )
• Railways is slowly eliminating Level (railway) crossing at populated roads, by making either underway or over bridge. This will help to reduce traffic jams as well as run over accidents. (Elimination of accidents at level crossings will reduce death toll on Indian Railways by more than half )

These are some steps taken by Indian Railways to improve the safety. Maybe there are more steps taken. These are what I remember.However, their sufficiency and efficiency is a topic of debate.
