Do you want to go out at night? Are you crazy?

If you live circa 100 CE, you might have heard of the famous poet Juvenal. He said that going out on your own at night is manifest negligence unless you have drawn your will and testament before. He even said that you’d be safest in the Gallinaria forest or at the Pontine Marshes that in the centre of Rome after sunset.

Remember that there is no street lighting, and there are lots of backstreets in absolute darkness. And we know how much criminals love darkness.

Unless, of course, that you are one of those long-haired loutish hooligans that go out in groups commiting all kinds of outrages (evil tongues say emperor Nero was one of them 35 or 40 years ago). In that case you’ll have no problem mingling with robbers (effractores) and assailants (raptores). If that is so, you might visit certain neighbourhoods were taverns (popinae, thermopolia) abounded. In these places you can get some fast food, and in those which closed particularly late, you may enjoy some illegal gambling or prostitution.

Start off the day with an afternoon watching the games at the Coliseum or the chariot races at the Circus Maximus with friends and betting on your favorites.

Then, take your lady friend (or friends) to a party at a noble equestrian’s home, gorge yourself on good food and wine and participate in a good old fashioned orgy.

The next day (after you have recovered from your hangover) start all over again!

It depends entirely upon your class and occupation.

If you are a slave working on a latifundia (plantation) or in a mine, you get some barley gruel or something like that and spend your evening in whatever slave quarters are provided, perhaps chained, perhaps not.

If you are a household slave with a reasonable owner you might have a decent meal with bread and perhaps a stew of some kind. You might have a pleasant evening hanging around your quarters with other slaves, or your master.

If you are a Roman peasant, you eat what you grow or raise on your farm. If you are pretty successful, the fare might be decent, but probably ordinarily would include a lot of the same type of barley gruel slaves eat, supplemented by bread, meat, some vegetables and dairy products. You eat that at home with your family. You drink wine or beer if you can afford it or make your own.

If you are a typical urban plebian you might eat, as another poster noted, from a street “restaurant” although these really were just mostly food stalls. You would buy whatever they sold, mostly the delicious gruel, or stew, maybe bread. You would eat it where you stood or on a bench or something like that, or take it back to your insulae (apartment building.) If you are a free man, you might eat and drink at a tavern, whatever they have. Wine/beer to drink, bread, cheese, stew, olives, whatever is on hand to eat.

If you are a wealthy enough urban plebian to own a slave or two, and have your own domus (house) with a kitchen, your slave will cook for you. Depending upon your wealth, maybe gruel or stew, or a hunk of meat or fish if you are better off, with bread, cheese, etc. If you are not wealthy enough to own a slave, but to buy that kind of food, your wife and daughters prepare it. Maybe you go to the tavern later. You would presumably have wine and beer at home as well.

If you are an upper class Roman, of the noble classes, you will have your own domus or something quite a bit more palatial, and plenty of slaves to take care of your feeding and entertainment. If you have the money for the ingredients, your slave chefs will fix you elaborate meals, from exotic game animals to dormice prepared in any number of ways to visually whet the appetite, supplemented by fresh fruit, cheeses, vegetables, and sweets. You would have the finest domestic and imported wines.

As a wealthy Roman there is no need to go out for entertainment, the meal is the entertainment. It might last a long time as you recline on a dining couch, and slaves bring you food, while other slaves or hired troubadours perform. Later you can entertain yourself with various sex slaves of all ages and sexes if that floats your boat, or if you are the more intellectual type, retire to your library to read a popular work.

At all meals, for all classes most likely, garum the ubiquitous Roman fermented fish sauce would accompany the meal.

At midday you close down the shop, stop at some kind of inn (there were many of different classes, some very cheap and some very upscale), buy yourself a meal of some kind of hot soup, bread, and vegetables, maybe an egg too, before visiting the public baths.

Roman inns had large heated bars where food was kept warm for clients.

Spas were so cheap that even slaves could usually afford going for a bath several times a week. Male citizens spent lots of time at the spa, not just washing but also chatting, training, getting shaven etc. Slaves just went for a quick wash and maybe half an hour of rest, women could do either, stay and chat with friends or wash rapidly and go back home, depending on how rich they were. Another afternoon occupation of the citizens was visiting the forum, during the Republic to take part to the decision-making processes, during the Empire to listen to which laws had been promoted and to catch up with more gossip and news.

Family dinner at the table

In the evening most people ate a light dinner: leftover bread from lunch, some olives, a salad, maybe some cottage cheese (kind of), and obviously wine. In the city houses were tiny and had no fireplace. Cooking indoors in summer wasn’t comfortable, in winter small braziers provided heat and could help heat up food, but were not used to make complicated meals. Rich families would eat better food, but regular dinners were still pretty frugal and usually took place at the table on stools.

Sarcophagust of the Spouses, Etruscan sculpture

Triclinia were used instead for highly formal feasts to which usually (following the Greek habit) only men took part (if women were present they sat on stools). This way of eating was probably derived from the Etruscans, but Etruscan formal banquets likely included the women too (Etruscan women seem to have had a larger social role than Roman women). During banquets food was often brought in from an inn, or maybe the house owner would hire a famous cook who prepared most food at his or her place and only added the finishing touches at his employer’s home, cooking in a corridor and in the back yard of the house. As a matter of facts, Roman houses didn’t have kitchens.

Food cooked according to Roman recipes at a modern buffet

Roman banquets could extend into the night, sometimes until dawn. Common people had their dinner at sunset or not shortly after. The rest of the evening (rather short as lamp oil was costly) would be spent chatting. The father told the whole family (which included the slaves) what he had heard at the Forum and at the spa, the mother told the family what she had heard at the spa and at the fountain. Maybe the family could play some games, or there was some storytelling, maybe friends from the same neighborhood visited for a chat. Common people went to bed quite early, as they also rose early in the morning.

1. Cancel Your Car Insurance

You might not even realize it, but your car insurance company is probably overcharging you. In fact, they’re kind of counting on you not noticing. Luckily, this problem is easy to fix.

Don’t waste your time browsing insurance sites for a better deal. A company called Insurify shows you all your options at once — people who do this save up to $996 per year.

If you tell them a bit about yourself and your vehicle, they’ll send you personalized quotes so you can compare them and find the best one for you.

Tired of overpaying for car insurance? It takes just five minutes to compare your options with Insurify and see how much you could save on car insurance.

2. Ask This Company to Get a Big Chunk of Your Debt Forgiven

A company called National Debt Relief could convince your lenders to simply get rid of a big chunk of what you owe. No bankruptcy, no loans — you don’t even need to have good credit.

If you owe at least $10,000 in unsecured debt (credit card debt, personal loans, medical bills, etc.), National Debt Relief’s experts will build you a monthly payment plan. As your payments add up, they negotiate with your creditors to reduce the amount you owe. You then pay off the rest in a lump sum.

On average, you could become debt-free within 24 to 48 months. It takes less than a minute to sign up and see how much debt you could get rid of.

3. You Can Become a Real Estate Investor for as Little as $10

Take a look at some of the world’s wealthiest people. What do they have in common? Many invest in large private real estate deals. And here’s the thing: There’s no reason you can’t, too — for as little as $10.

An investment called the Fundrise Flagship Fund lets you get started in the world of real estate by giving you access to a low-cost, diversified portfolio of private real estate. The best part? You don’t have to be the landlord. The Flagship Fund does all the heavy lifting.

With an initial investment as low as $10, your money will be invested in the Fund, which already owns more than $1 billion worth of real estate around the country, from apartment complexes to the thriving housing rental market to larger last-mile e-commerce logistics centers.

Want to invest more? Many investors choose to invest $1,000 or more. This is a Fund that can fit any type of investor’s needs. Once invested, you can track your performance from your phone and watch as properties are acquired, improved, and operated. As properties generate cash flow, you could earn money through quarterly dividend payments. And over time, you could earn money off the potential appreciation of the properties.

So if you want to get started in the world of real-estate investing, it takes just a few minutes to sign up and create an account with the Fundrise Flagship Fund.

This is a paid advertisement. Carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of the Fundrise Real Estate Fund before investing. This and other information can be found in the Fund’s prospectus. Read them carefully before investing.

4. Earn Up to $50 this Month By Answering Survey Questions About the News — It’s Anonymous

The news is a heated subject these days. It’s hard not to have an opinion on it.

Good news: A website called YouGov will pay you up to $50 or more this month just to answer survey questions about politics, the economy, and other hot news topics.

Plus, it’s totally anonymous, so no one will judge you for that hot take.

When you take a quick survey (some are less than three minutes), you’ll earn points you can exchange for up to $50 in cash or gift cards to places like Walmart and Amazon. Plus, Penny Hoarder readers will get an extra 500 points for registering and another 1,000 points after completing their first survey.

It takes just a few minutes to sign up and take your first survey, and you’ll receive your points immediately.

5. Stop Paying Your Credit Card Company

If you have credit card debt, you know. The anxiety, the interest rates, the fear you’re never going to escape… but a website called AmONE wants to help.

If you owe your credit card companies $100,000 or less, AmONE will match you with a low-interest loan you can use to pay off every single one of your balances.

The benefit? You’ll be left with one bill to pay each month. And because personal loans have lower interest rates (AmONE rates start at 6.40% APR), you’ll get out of debt that much faster.

It takes less than a minute and just 10 questions to see what loans you qualify for.

6. Earn Up to $225 This Month Playing Games on Your Phone

Ever wish you could get paid just for messing around with your phone? Guess what? You totally can.

Swagbucks will pay you up to $225 a month just for installing and playing games on your phone. That’s it. Just download the app, pick the games you like, and get to playing. Don’t worry; they’ll give you plenty of games to choose from every day so you won’t get bored, and the more you play, the more you can earn.

This might sound too good to be true, but it’s already paid its users more than $429 million. You won’t get rich playing games on Swagbucks, but you could earn enough for a few grocery trips or pay a few bills every month. Not too shabby, right?

Everything is within walking distance. The city center is extremely safe and most of the external architecture is visible even at night.

If you are in the mood for drinks, stop at pubs/bars while you wander. If you're looking to meet other people, the bars in Campo de Fiori are open late, and are filled with a mix of locals, American exchange students, and tourists. You're pretty much guaranteed to meet people there, but it's also kind of obnoxious and "touristy." Alternatively, you can grab a bottle of prosecco and split it with friends while sitting on the edge of a fountain in one of Rome's piazzas and talk while taking in the view (no open container laws previously, but this may not still be the case).

If the Porta Portese market is open the following morning, I would go to the antique section there and do some treasure hunting before leaving for your flight. It's an experience in itself and you can find some seriously interesting things. People start setting up by flashlight around 5am. Make sure to pick up a porchetta panini at one of the stands there before leaving.

A great fire which destroyed almost all the town. It is said that the fire has been caused by emperor Nerone (according to historician Svetonius) . He, in order to avoid any suspect, accused the christians of the act and many of them have been condamned to death in some horrible ways: some torn by animals, some crucified and some other used as human torches on sunset.

However, Ancient Romans did have a form of banking. At first, they were places from which people could borrow legal tender to pay their debts, but later they could also convert currency, and later still do *very* limited depositing (if I remember my history lessons correctly, the investing that modern banks do didn't come about for several centuries). Banks appointed by the government were also responsible for collecting taxes.

The one thing not to do is take a taxi. Unless you agree in advance on the price they will rip you off beyond belief.

My suggestion: Tell the driver where you want to go. Get his price. Then show him you only have X-amount of Euros, a much lesser number than he gave you. Generally that will do the trick and you don't get 'robbed' at your destination.

I'd go to Ostia and ask a ship and crew if they taking passengers. I can negotiate with captain for accommodations and provisions. I'd need to hire a few German bodyguards to accompany me.

Rome Burns

- The city of Rome was nearly destroyed in a catastrophic fire. The fire is said to have been set by Nero. Legend has it that 'Rome burned while Nero fiddled'.

Seriously, do you think that coined money is an invention of just recent years/decades/centuries?

If you want something you can only find around Rome go to Ariccia and go to a fraschetta, which is a typical place that serve only typical food but is the opposite of elegant, in fact was the place for the peasants. Nowdays there you’ll find the best food you’ll ever eat.

A good one is the “Aricciarola” in Ariccia near Rome address Ariccia Via Borgo S. Rocco 9

Edit:

My wife reminded me also “La Gattabuia” address Via del Porto 1

Is quite good but a tad costly. You’ll find typical roman dishes.

IMHO, colorful Trastevere is one of the best areas in Rome for young people. It's a funky, bohemian area that clings to its centuries-old, working-class roots. It's known for traditional and innovative trattorias, craft beer pubs and artisan shops, as well as simple B&Bs and budget hotels. From the pre-dinner passeggiata (promenade) until late, a young crowd buzzes around Piazza di San Calisto and Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, the site of a gilded, mosaic-filled church.

On the opposite bank of the Tiber lies the most fun and picturesque popular neighbourhood of Rome. It is a perfect area to wander through the maze of narrow streets and for a hotel in Rome. At night it is Rome's liveliest neighbourhood.

I don’t know if I could spend that much money in a single night. Maybe if I go to some high-end sushi restaurant and then watch one or two movies in the cinema, then I’d probably exhaust it all in one night. But chances are that I’d just be frugal and save the money. If this is a use-it-or-lose-it scenario, I’d probably still remain frugal and just let my benefactor save a few bucks.

It's just a few time to do something, but in 13 hours you could reach Termini station with a train from the airport to it. In this way you could do a short walk in the city centre, looking the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Moreover you could reach with the buses or also by foot the area of Piazza Venezia. Some photos and you can return to the airport...if you want to restore yourself in a pub you could go in the area of rione Monti, next to Termini Station...

The Roman Forum and the Colosseum. Definitely also Pompei, the only ruins of an entire Roman City still in existence on earth.

Ruin your car tires on one of the now-legendary potholes in Roman streets. That will make you a bona fide local, for sure.

First, get a hotel in the centro storico in Rome, go visit Trastevere and spend time there, lots of locals, restaurants and events. Try all trattoria s in hidden streets around vía del Corso o Piazza Navons. Try to go to the beach to Ostia or Fregene. Spelrlonga is another beautiful beach with amazing surroundings.

Lastly visit the Spanish Steps and explore the area.

The first things that I would suggest is that you go out and by a book that is called Let’s Go Italy they have everything that you need in one little book. Places to see things to do hotels and bed and breakfast.

We did Rome and stayed in the B and B’s it was very cheep you got to experience the Italian Flavor and the book does not waste your time because it also includes price’s so you know exactly what you are paying. Hope this help’s .

The train station areas have many young people mulling about though it is questionable what they are up to, if good or not. You can find many young people around the main attractions of Rome too usually safe for meeting in the squares and courts close by.

Stay for a couple of weeks.

It occurred to me, go in late September or October. The hot summer months have passed and the tourist season is over. The city might return to it’s usual rhythm.

It depends. You can take a charter flight and sleep with the homeless in the central station, it will be cheap. Otherwise look for an hotel, restaurants and places you want to visit. So you can have an idea about the cost of your journey.
