Facial Verification technology is steadily increasing in prominence and it has revolutionized how businesses project their businesses in this modern information-driven markets. Where for-profit use is one aspect, other departments like law enforcement have started to use FR Tech to mitigate crime.
Facial Recognition has its respective advantages and disadvantages
Advantage
- FR tech greatly reduces the chances of any criminal incident, by identifying through facial biometrics an individual who has been notorious(Wanted) or doubtful, due to the nature of their activities beforehand. Before the incident has taken place.
- FR tech leverages on the facial biometrics of an individual and more previous criminals can be scanned digitally. i.e More cases can be put under work than having pending cases not being worked on. Accelerate forensic video cases.
- Effective FR tech prevents false arrests by accurately identifying faces in short span times.
- Using FR tech allows law enforcement officials to spend more time in policing and maintaining law and order than in files and digging information.
- Early detection of criminal in a way allows law enforcement officers in the field to secure themselves and takes precautionary measures earlier.
- Early detection of criminals or a group of individuals allows law enforcement agencies to scramble adequate resources in man and machinery in the field to secure themselves.
Disadvantage
- A risk to the privacy of individuals, even if criminals or inmates are concerned.
- Questionable to non-existent consent practices for the use of facial verification in law and criminal enforcement departments
- The technology itself is still in the process of development so detection rates are constantly being worked on.
- FR tech is hardware dependent, nations have not yet established such a robust extent of a network that is digitally connected to carry out active facial verification and monitoring simultaneously.
- No central regulation in place to effectively establish a legal basis of processing for corporate entities and government use of facial verification for commercial or governmental purposes.
- Public perception/opinion towards facial verification is not so accepting of the concept. Like the monitoring of all internet activity and data by the NSA is concerned with all US citizens. Another type of monitoring surveillance will just add to their displeasures of the technology and in the government to use such technology for their benefit under the false umbrella of ‘rogue activities/terrorist prevention’.
