The Crowd.
Yes, normal people that you meet every day.
There is an old Chinese saying: man's nature at birth is good.
But I doubt it.
Khmer Rouge, The Holocaust, The Nanking Massacre are crazy things people did in crazy times, but the desire of killing never disappears no matter when.
I want to tell a story that I read from newspaper a few hours ago. It happened in China.
A young girl, only 19 years old, jumped from a tall building and died.
She was depressed because a high school teacher sexually assaulted her.
Before she jumped, she had been sitting on the edge of the building for two hours. She didn’t really have to die, in fact, she was trying to find a reason to live.
Then she fell. A fireman who was sent to save her grabbed her by the hand. The fireman was trying his best to pull her back.
There were hundreds of people gathered under the building, they shouted:
1,2,3, jump ! 1–2–3, jump! 1–2–3, jump!
I am burning by sun just to see you jump, come on, jump! Hurry up!
Don’t be a coward, after seeing you jump that I can go home, don’t waste my time!
They booed, they laughed, they opened their live video app to show their fans what was happening. Like vultures, they all waited for the girl to die .
The girl heard the noise from crowds, she raised her head and spoke to the fireman: "Thank you Sir, you are a good man, but I have to go now." She squirmed out of his hands, and her body hit the ground heavily.
While the fireman was crying: "Don’t do silly things like that!", The crowd applauded.
The fireman was married at a registry just 20 minutes before he was sent to rescue the girl. He is being treated because of nervous breakdown now.
I don’t think any one of the crowd under the building will think he or she has anything to do with the death of a young woman or a sad memory that a young man will carry along all his life.
They will only leave a comment: Emmm, she really jumped, what a weak-minded girl! And go back to their home, cook a meal, have a nice sleep, be a good father, a good mother, a kind brother, a lovely sister.
It is all because of involution.
China is a country with too many people and too few resources. The situation seems to be—as it is in too many places—dog eat dog.
When humans are forced to compete with others, they treat everyone as enemies. Once they find a chance to bully someone, they will surely make good use of it, doubtless a subconscious expression of killing people to gain more resources. After all, the law can not be enforced when everyone is an offender.
Who were the most evil people in history?
The Crowd. And they always will be, as long as involution exists.
