I use a Waterpik religiously every night after brushing. I also have a fair number of fillings that are sensitive to cold water,so I use warm water for flossing. After I had been using my Waterpik for about a year,my hygienist told me I have no periodontal pockets in my gums, which is unusual for someone like myself in my sixties, and I am sure my good gum health is due to water flossing, which gives your gums a good massage. Edit: My hygienist does not believe water flossing is as good as string flossing for plaque removal, but then has told me not to stop water flossing.

Because cold water at high pressure is very unpleasant. Currently the cold water the comes out of my taps is capable of causing physical pain. I don’t want to particularly imagine what it feels like being blasted against my gums and sensitive teeth.

One does not have to use warm water for oral irrigators. It is just more comfortable in the mouth, especially for the teeth, to use warm water as opposed to cold water.

I think a lot of dental hygienists have learned that it's significantly easier to get patients to use a Waterpik every day than it is to get them to floss.

Once you get used to orts in the basin and a splattered bathroom mirror, spritzing your teeth before you brush is a pretty low key affair.

  • Warm water incubates bacteria. We do not want to be spraying any harmful germs into patients mouths.
  • Our equipment is fed from bottles as most water supply grids do not want medical equipment attached to their systems in case of contamination. You can fill a bottle with warm water but you have to keep it warm or you would be filling bottles all day long. This incubates bacteria. You could have an instant heater system like a small version of an electric shower but they have to be precise, too cold and you might as well not bother heating it at all, too hot and you will cause injuries.

Hot water isn't a simple request.

Here is another strategy. Stay off the acidic drinks and foods, use desensitising toothpastes and keep your teeth clean. These things combined will reduce your sensitivity a lot meaning dental treatment, and everything else you do with your teeth will be less painful.

I cannot say without doubt that your gum recession is not because of the water flosser, but with proper use as recommended by the manufacturer I can guarantee that the risk is far below that for string floss or other methods of flossing.

Water works. Water does not produce a fine mist of oil that can be breathed into the lungs, causing lipid pneumonia. The body has no mechanism to remove oils from the lung.

Oils are sticky. They would contaminate any effort to place fillings or crowns. You cannot bond to a film of oil on a tooth. Cements do not attach to oil layers. Oils are mildly toxic.

The specific heat of oil is about 2.5 as compared to water at 2.05, or 1.2 :1. Quite a mess for about 20% improvement is dissipating heat. Hey, increase the water flow by 50%. What an idea! And you have lots of branch water coming out of pipes.

Also the pressure is fairly high on the “pushing” end which when water is forced through a small opening it becomes a focused stream that can blast food, or plaque off the teeth. So if you think of how a power washer, or a garden hose attachment, or even the water jets on a jacuzzi/hot tub all work it’s the same principal, a powerful stream of water is made by forcing water through a small opening. Now with a water pik, which is what I use, the water is pulsed, and so it comes out in kind of rapid fire bursts, and not just one continuous stream. I have also used a Phillips water flossers that when you pressed the button one single high pressured burst would come out, and so you had to keep pressing the button on every tooth gap. Water piks just steady pulse water until the reservoir is empty by the way.

Alright so now that I’ve covered the mechanics of water flosser I will describe how they are actually used just for the sake of clarity, I try and answer questions like this with the mindset a person reading my answer has never used a water flosser/pik. So you take the “wand” part of the water pik that has a tiny hole, and use place the hole directly over the gap between each tooth right next to where the two teeth meet the gum line, then depending on the type of flosser, you either hit a button for one burst of water then move to the next gap , or if it’s is a continuous stream of water pulses, you just turn the thing on, and move the wand from one gap to the next. I also will kind of turn the wand a little to inject the water along the whole length of the gap of those two teeth if that makes sense. But I believe the water pressure is enough to go fully around the tooth to wher the water even rinses out under the gum line on the back of the teeth.

The difference is that the water flosser uses a soft water flow as a cleaning power. Research by relevant dental research institutes in the United States found that proper water flow can effectively clean people's teeth and mouth. Just as high-pressure water guns can more easily wash cars, water flosser. can easily wash residual teeth with high-speed water jets sprayed at a certain pressure. Dirts in places such as gingival sulcus and flank. And because of the special nature of the water flow, it can shuttle through various areas of the mouth, which can more thoroughly clean the mouth.

Of course, the cleaning effect of the water floss has a great relationship with the water flow pressure. If the water flow pressure is too high, it will easily damage the teeth and gums during the impact; if the water flow pressure is too small, the cleaning effect will not be achieved. . While many people start to use water flosser as an upgrade to traditional floss, increasing number of water flosser types made selecting the right one harder than before.

To make this answer complete, I want to first talk about how and why water flosser works.

To achieve the purpose of cleaning teeth and improving gums, water flosser wash away food debris and plaque in hidden places (between teeth, under gums, braces, etc.) through a jet of powerful pulses of water. Mouth is like a capet, if you don't clean up food particles every time you eat, plaque can grow like dirt on the mat. If you just use a brush, cleaning would be hard. The same with your teeth, whether you use a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, there will always be slits between teeth that you can't reach. If you use a high-pressure water gun to clean a carpet, it will be much more effective. Similarly, if you have a "water gun product" in your mouth (which uses the pressure you gum can hold), you can easily remove food debris and plaque from slits.

I'm not a doctor, but I've been in the oral care industry for seven years. A lot of people ask me, "Why not use cheap toothpicks or floss if the toothbrush doesn't work?"

To better answer this question, I have listed the advantages and disadvantages of most oral care products on the market at present, so that we can compare them clearly.

You can find that water flosser is the most efficient tool for oral deep cleaning. That leave us to the question: how do we choose from so much different water flossers on the market?

When we choose water flosser, there are only three things we need to pay attention to: pressure range, water tank size and mode selection.

● Pressure range (PSI)

The greater the pressure range, the better the product. Our mouth is dynamic change every day, will encounter a variety of situations. Such as gum swelling, bleeding, etc., water flosser with a wide range of pressure can meet our real oral needs.

● Water tank size

The size of the tank determines how easy it is to use. Because no one likes a water flosser that needs to be refilled 10 times for one cleaning, just like you don't need a car that can only go 5 miles with a full gas. Under normal circumstances, a 300ml (10oz) water tank is enough for one complete flossing.

● Mode selection

If possible, choose water flossers with different modes. Beginners should start with the lightest mode and adjust to higher strength after establishing tolerance.

Next, let's talk about who should use water flosser.

1. People with orthodontic treatment

If you've ever worn braces, you know that after eating, there's a lot of food left on the edge of the wire that can't be thoroughly cleaned with a toothbrush or dental floss. Those food residuals can eventually lead to plaque. There is a floss called “Platypus” on the market for consumers with braces, but it still seems cumbersome and inefficient. So the water flosser can solve this problem faster and better.

2. People with large interdental gaps and prone teeth

Compared with toothpicks and floss, water flosser is more effective in removing food debris from the teeth, and less likely to cause damage to gums.

3. People with odor, inflammation, mild tooth decay, etc. in the mouth

If you have the above symptoms, you should pay more attention, because this means that your oral alarm has sounded, and please hold the last straw of "cleaning your mouth".

4. People with fixed dentures and dental implants

This kind of people need to pay more attention to oral hygiene, oral hygiene will directly affect the service life of denture retention and dental implant.

So, now, does flossing really work? I'll show you with my own experiments.

[1] Display of dental plaque before brushing teeth

[2] Display of dental plaque after brushing with m-teeth electric toothbrush

[3] Display of dental plaque after using M-teeth water flosser

According to the experiment, we can clearly see that the water floss can effectively remove the food residue and plaque between the teeth. Of course, it is definitely not enough to use a water flosser alone. Gargeling after meals and brushing twice is also very important, especially for those who have or had oral treatments or diseases.

COMPARISON AMONG DIFFERENT WATER FLOSSERS:

Among different types of water flossers coming in the market almost every other day are known due to their distinctive features. Flossers like Waterpik Aquarius WP-662 has extra capacity which makes it easier to use. We don’t have a need of refilling the tank after a short while. New flossers also have two modes including massage and cleansing mode. All the research being done on water flossers clearly indicate that Waterpik Aquarius WP-662 is the most fitting option to choose.

Some flossers likely give very silent flossing procedure and keep it as quiet as possible. This makes the users to pick such flossers that have this ability. Examples include H20floss HF flosser. Another feature associated with this flosser is that it has large water tank. The pressure range of this flosser is from 5 psi to 110 psi.

Many other flossers are cordless that is one of the excellent features flossers have. Cordless flossers have a quality of beautiful design. The recharge capacity is the feature that makes the flossers always “to choose” option. Few flossers also have a pump that can push the water up with high pressure. This high pressure enables the flossers to wipe all the bacteria with strength and thus playing a better role in cleansing.

Comfort in cleansing the teeth is top priority of every person. For this reason, we need to look for different options and then we are required to choose the one that gets us all covered. Due to this, we look for flossers with best water retaining capacity, reliable size, easy to use, high jet pressure.

Waterpik Nano Plus WP-320 has its name for being the most suitable when it comes to cleansing and brushing the teeth. It contains toothbrush within it and has a small size reliable for the limited space.

Else, there are flossers coming in the market that help fading away or even completely wiping off the stains on teeth. Examples include BESTOPE water flosser. It does not give us a worry pf charging it frequently rather it can work for weeks to months when charged once.

The other considerable feature that needs to be mentioned here is the 2 in 1 function of flossers. They give you the brushing and flossing capacity within a single flosser. Few of the flossers also come out in the market having a timer that makes them more reliable.

BENEFITS OF USING A WATER FLOSSER:

The high-pressure quality of water flossers enables them to clean those particles trapped within the oral cavity that are hard to be removed by the toothbrush. This makes them preferrable option especially for the people having braces. Water flossers are specially designed as they carry water that is ejected through the pump and provides cleansing.

Water flossers are preferred over dental flossers due to the fact that they are more gentle, soothe the gums sensitivity and are easy to use. People with braces can easily use water flossers within the metal wires and remove all the tiny food particles accurately. The electric flossers have their own risks. Else, prices get us all astounded but most of the flossers now-a-days are affordable ones. My personal opinion, based on 43 years as a dentist, is that water flossers benefit only their manufacturers and sellers. I see them as toys.

It is however possible that there are studies showing that they have some effect on the microbe plaque, but I haven’t seen any. They are recommended for removing food particles from between your teeth - but removing food particles has very little effect on your oral health. Both cavities and periodontal disease are caused by bacteria, not by food. So the important question is: do they remove plaque? I think not, but I my be wrong.

Water flossers seem to be an American thing, they are a lot less popular in Europe, because European dentistry and medicine are not as profit-centered as in the US. Health benefits are more important than financial benefits.

I brush twice daily and use a water flosser before bed rather than dental floss. I hate string flossing with a passion. Every time I get my teeth cleaned by the hygienist I get the same lecture: use dental floss. There are peer reviewed studies that have found water flossing removes more plaque than string flossing, but my hygienist doesn’t seem to buy it. The funny thing is she also says don’t stop water flossing either,as it has done wonders for my gums, which she is highly impressed by,especially for someone in their early seventies.

This basically due to having some gum recession, where the parts of the tooth not covered with enamel are affected by the bleach. Generally our gums cover enough of our tooth that only the enamel part of the tooth is exposed. But with gum recession, the roots of the teeth ( i.e. that part that isn’t covered with enamel) become exposed. These roots are covered with cementum and are porous, absorbing some of the bleaching agent. The bleach used in bleaching strips, or in dental clinics will not erode our enamel.

If the teeth become too painful, stop bleaching for a few days until the pain subsides and then perhaps only use the strips every other day until the desired color is obtained. Our saliva will help close off these pores which is why the sensitivity will decrease.

The reason is simple, the rinsing action of Waterpiks may not be powerful enough to remove sticky plaque from the surface of teeth.

Most people hate flossing because it is difficult, annoying, boring but this is the most important thing you can do for your teeth. If you do not like flossing then use devices like the popular Easy Flosser (search it on google) to make the flossing session easier and if your teeth are not floss-able (too tight) then use interdental brushes or as last resource a water jet but never stop flossing.

A: I dunno, why DO you? I mean, what kind of mouthwash are you using anyway?

No, you don’t have to wait because there is alcohol in the mouthwash that would otherwise go into your body. Because, frankly, it WILL go into your body.

You want to wait a while because if the mouthwash kills bacteria that cause bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease (and incidentally Alzheimer’s disease, which was a recent discovery … read more here … Gum disease linked to Alzheimer’s, study claims) then you want to give it time to work. Having a nice cleanly flossed and brushed mouth that’s been well rinsed with bacteria-killing mouthwash will allow the mouthwash to remain in place longer, killing more of the bacteria.

The sooner you rinse out the active mouthwash ingredients, the sooner the bacteria will start multiplying again, because you did NOT get them all, and that’s guaranteed, because they’re very tiny and they hide out in places that you cannot brush or rinse or floss.

So, yeah, you give your mouth a break from bacteria by going for a while without rinsing or eating after you clean your teeth AND use mouthwash.

That’s why you might want to wait.

If you can't make yourself floss skillfully and patiently, then yes - use the water floss. It lowers the food debris consumed by the millions of bacteria in your mouth. Yes millions - I used a microscope for 10 years and 90% of new patients start out this way. Even teenagers, due to the very complex chemistry of saliva and the incubation environment of the warm, moist mouth.

Every patient has specific needs and only a regular hygienist, who remembers you, can carefully recommend your dental home care. I stayed 5- 10 years on my 3 jobs, so I could carefully developed each persons manual dexterity. After 6 visits in 2–3 years most people were fine if they continued both home care and professional cleanings. Patient education is taught in all dental hygiene schools to help you to avoid the damage of disease and expensive dental costs.

It's every persons educated choice: Would an adult rather buy a car, or pay to be careless about their teeth? And for teenagers who refuse to brush and floss? Ask them to pay 5- 10% of their bill. This teaches responsibility. And all of this is avoidable with education provided in every US dental office.

In my personal opinion,i think the water flosser is more useful than the actual floss.

We usually use a toothbrush to clean our teeth, but there is no way to clean the mouth completely, and there is no way to brush the teeth several times a day. Therefore, if you want to make a complete oral cleaning, it is necessary to use an auxiliary cleaning tool. And the water floss can come in handy. First let's take a look at the difference between the two.

Flossing is generally effective with nylon, silk or polyester threads to clean the adjacent plaque of the teeth, especially for flat or convex teeth.

Flossing is generally effective with nylon, silk or polyester threads to clean the adjacent plaque of the teeth, especially for flat or convex teeth. Use floss to pull down a 25-degree floss, twist the two ends of the wire into a double-knot, or take a 33-cm floss, and wrap the ends of the wire around the two middle fingers, with the left and right fingers The floss can be cleaned through the contact points. Although it is convenient to use dental floss, in addition to cleaning plaque in the teeth, the floss does not have the ability to clean the bacteria inside the mouth, and it cannot penetrate. In the initial use, the gum may be bleeding due to improper operation.

Bellow is a video about the effect and how to use of the Liberex Water Flosser.

The water floss is the device that cleans the mouth with a high-pressure pulsed water flow. Its high-pressure water flow can penetrate deep into the gaps of the teeth and the gingival sulcus, clean the toothbrush and the place where the floss can't be cleaned. Even if we brush our teeth every day, we can't eliminate the plaque, and the floss can't penetrate the gap and gums. Gully, so the water flosser can play a very important role. Use the water flosser on the basis of brushing to achieve the best cleaning results. The water flosser are not only safer and more effective, but the different technologies produce different water flows.

Liberex Water Flosser comes with 5 rotable nozzles tips,it’s very flexiable to use the water flosser in any angle. It's perfect for anyone with braces or implants, and those with crowns, bridges, and veneers, helps clean up the blind spots, remove debris.

Therefore, in the process of selecting the water flosser, it is certain that the problem of high-end or price can not be avoided.

Therefore, there must be some entanglement and hesitation in the choice. You can take a look at my previous choice of water flosser. There are relevant specific choices.

But here I still want to find some tooth punches with high cost performance of low price.

Take the water flosser I recently bought for my boyfriend as an example.

It not only contains five selective pressure modes, but also 300ml super large capacity water tank. The initial impression is very good. After all, the quality and after-sales are guaranteed.

Among them, the five modes are divided into soft mode, gentle mode, standard mode, strong mode and spot mode. Water pressure can be divided into strong and weak, and different modes can be used by different people.

For example, the novice who uses the water flosser for the first time can use the gentle mode to feel the subtle changes of water flow in the mouth, which is a comfortable oral massage.

For those who wear braces, the spot shooting mode is more suitable. Strong high-frequency pulse water flow, click and spray, can easily wash the vegetable stains between the teeth, and no longer have to bear the trouble of inadequate oral cleaning.

Personally, I can use the standard mode.Sufficient water flow without stimulation can easily wash away the vegetable stains between teeth.

Another thing worth mentioning is the 300ml super large capacity water tank.

When I used the water flosser before, I was very worried that the water tank was too small. Often before the first tooth is flushed, it needs to change the water again. The operation is troublesome, and it is easy to waste time. This tooth punch is more than enough to punch teeth once.

In addition to the above advantages, it can also be disassembled and loaded with water, which is convenient for changing and washing. Hide dirt and accept dirt. What doesn't exist, wash it all.

Most people use cold water when brushing their teeth, so the question’s premise is flawed.

Patients whose teeth are sensitive to cold, however, may prefer to use warm water when brushing instead.

Surprisingly few effective brushing and flossing techniques, especially among those who shy away from dental offices.

Hacking in and out a few times with a stiff brush, as if impatient to get it over with, shreds gums and gouges the soft tooth roots, and leaves nearly all bacteria colonies untouched.

Hydrogen peroxide is a corrosive. In whitening the teeth it also eats away some of the tooth surface, reducing the tooth’s thermal insulation and thus increasing sensitivity to temperature.

Home tooth whiteners are more likely to be used improperly, increasing the risk of a greater resultant degree of sensitivity.

My own recommendations for my patients, depends fundamentally on what their real needs are.

Harvard Health Publishing reports that researchers “could not find convincing evidence to support flossing, and the guidelines are supposed to be evidence-based. According to reviews of the evidence published in 2011 and 2015, there is minimal, short-term, and generally unreliable evidence that flossing might reduce gum inflammation, but no convincing evidence that it promotes plaque removal or prevents tooth decay or dental caries (cavities).”

Following is what you have usually been told beginning in the 1970s.

“The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth two to three times per day to remove plaque, residual food, and bacteria from the surface of your teeth. However, while this is beneficial and necessary, your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere in your mouth. This is where flossing can make all the difference in your oral health. The thin fibers of floss allow you to get in between your teeth and remove the plaque and bacteria before it builds up and begins to erode the enamel of your teeth or harden into calculus along the gum line that can lead to gum disease.”

This is what you need to know about The American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. In 2016, the Associated Press reported the ADA charges $14,500 and a $3,500 annual fee for the 5-Year ADA Seal of Approval. Source: What does it take to earn the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance?

Levi Spear invented dental floss in 1815 to address the concerns of his wealthy patients who got food stuck between their teeth. He then started selling the product. Promotion is part of successful sales, so he promoted. Reasons help to awaken needs in people, so Dr. Spear extolled the reasons for using the product. Sometimes rationalizations work as well as reasons, so he probably did that too. A hundred years later the concept was stolen by Johnson & Johnson and advertised on a grand scale.

In 1955 Colgate Palmolive introduced Crest, the first toothpaste with fluoride. During the early 1960s, in concert with the American Dental Association, Procter & Gamble, the current maker of Crest toothpaste, began a very aggressive advertising campaign for toothpaste, toothbrushing, and “seeing your dentist twice a year.”

During the 1970s Johnson & Johnson, again in concert with the American Dental Association, aggressively promoted dental flossing.

So, there you have it. How often are you going to floss?
