I am a dentist. I have to state this at the beginning of my answer to validate what happens next.

Dental students often practice cavity cutting procedures or root canal procedures on extracted teeth. We all generally have a bottle of those ( extracted human teeth), stashed away in our lockers. This one time, for some reason (locker re- allotment, I think) I had to empty my locker. I carried all my stuff to my hostel room, including the bottle of extracted teeth. Now this bottle was small (the size of a film canister) and was in my bag, for days. I meant to leave it in my room, but legit kept forgetting to do so.

As the academic year ended, I went home and we, ie., My family, had this whole trip planned. Nothing exciting, just temple-hopping in some state of India (sigh). So there I am, in a “holy” place filled with pilgrims, with my backpack which doubles as my college bag as and when required.

We reached late at night, and the plan was to rest that night and begin our quest to seek blessings early next morning. Come next morning, I couldn't find my tooth brush for the love of God. I dug into my backpack, dove into the abyss, trying to find my brush.

What do I find instead?

Yup.

That little bottle, filled with human teeth. I thought it to be so funny, that the bottle made it's journey across the state. My dad had a big laugh about how I unknowingly brought so many people with me on that trip. My mum just scolded me for not finding the brush, so I got back to it. The bottle was forgotten on the table beside the bed.

Temples were visited, blessings were sought and we made it back to the room, tired but ready to hit the next town.

We packed our bags early next morning to move on to the next temple. Few hours into the journey, I remembered all those “people” I brought with me. I looked for them in my bag, to no avail.

Gone. Forgotten.

I left the bottle of extracted teeth on a bed side table, in a hotel room in a holy place.

I pity the person who had to clean our room after that. I hope they didn't read too much into it.
