  1. Empathy - “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” Those that are empathetic are able to easily put themselves in the shoes of others and this applies to any industry. If you’re in sales, maybe it’s your metrics driven boss or a pissed of customer. If it’s in tech, maybe it’s a peer that you’re having a technical debate with. If you’re in the medical field it could be a child’s parents who is eagerly chasing you down for those lab results. Being empathetic helps you see the world from someone else’s viewpoint, even if it’s just for a minute.
  2. Emotional Intelligence (“EQ”) - Being able to manage your own emotions in real time and identifying how others are feeling without them telling you. Even better if you can apply this in stressful situations or take a logical, practical approach to problem solving.
  3. Self Awareness - Knowing your strengths, weaknesses, areas of knowledge etc. will take you a long way in showcasing how valuable you can be to any company.
  4. Non-Cookie Cutter Examples - Don’t tell me you like to motivate people, work in a team well or can communicate effectively. Walk me through a specific example or two that demonstrated these actions without even telling me what you did. Actions speak louder than words.
  5. A balance between shooting for the moon and logic - There’s a time for creativity and innovation but there’s also a time for getting work done and operating within reasonable constraints that the world gives us. You should always try to push for better, bigger etc. but use good reasoning.
  6. Calm under pressure - There will be times when things suck, when things break, when stuff just doesn’t go your way and you’ll want to pull your hair out. Show me you know how to manage the pressure, motivate others to do the same and get the work done.
