Since this question falls under "Life Advice" category, so I will assume that you are asking about general opportunities in your life.

In short, you can only balance until a certain degree.

This question is exactly why I love poker games. I will draw an example from one of my game and explain later how this is related. A long time ago, I was playing a friendly poker game with a few of my mates. In one of the rounds, I had a J♣ and 10♠ for my hand. So I call and a few of my mates followed as well.

The Flop cards showed up and they were: J♥ 2♠ 10♥

Wohoooo! So I gotten double pair straight from the flop. I raised the bet and couple of my mates fold. Two of my mates call my bet after thinking for a bit.

The Turn card was: J♦

Double wooohooo!! So my hand were FULL HOUSE by then and to beat that card is quite slim. After thinking for a bit, I doubled up my bet because I know that if I were to check, they will too. One of them fold and this leaves only my friend (James). James only had quite a handful of chips left and by calling this hand, he will be left with almost nothing.

After thinking back and forth, he went ALL IN and obviously, I matched his ALL IN. My thinking back then was:

  • I have a very strong hand and chances of him beating my hand, is quite slim.
  • Knowing James for a while now, he is typically a safe type of person and him thinking for so long, just doesn't add up.
  • He is running out of chips so he must be desperate to win back some.

He reveal his card and they were:
9♥ and 7♥

Wowwwww!! James is actually gunning for a straight flush. This means that the last card/ River card will not only need to be an 8 but also in the shape of ♥.

Quick Facts: The chances of someone to hit a straight flush is about 0.00139%. with the odds of 72,192 : 1.

The River card turned over and it wasss: 8♥

I remembered that I was sooo shocked and left completely speechless when the river card came out. I was thinking that "THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!", I had the perfect hand and chance to win the game but sadly, NOPE.

So back to your question: how do you balance picking the best options now with waiting for something better?

The reason why I brought that game up as an example is because life is pretty much like a poker game except you can't calculate life as accurate as you can calculate a poker game. You will never know what you will get in life. In that game, I calculate as accurate as I can before betting. Knowing perfectly, that the chance of beating my cards are extremely low and close to impossible.

Should I waited for the River card to show up before I double up my bet? Maybe. But will waiting decrease my chance of "winning"? Probably because James will then DEFINITELY know that he had the winning hand.

To answer your question, you can analyse as much as you can with the best options you have now and chances of something better coming up but it probably won't be very accurate. I would balance it out by considering whether I can live with the decision for the rest of my life. There MIGHT be a better opportunity down the road but you will also need to consider that there WON'T BE ONE as well. You will need to be able to accept both scenarios regardless which decision you make.

I didn't regret about my choice in that game because even though it's quite hard to accept at first but I think it was the best move that I could have made at that time.

There is a Chinese proverb which is quite relevant:

人算不如天算
The plans of man cannot compare to the plans of heaven.
