I was scared to be in the delivery room when my son was born. Before the delivery, I had read a book (Specially written for going- to -be fathers) about pregnancy. Reading the book made me so scared that I told my wife that I was not ready to hear the screams and see the blood. I can understand your fears, but you need to overcome those fears and be brave to be with your wife. Running away from such an important time would be really shameful.
Instead of becoming the terrifying event, being in the delivery room became one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.
Few things I never forgot about the experience of being with my wife in the delivery room.
1. My wife was afraid of dying. In case of a tragic event, she wanted to die in my arms. I could not imagine such a tragedy, but I realized that my presence was absolutely necessary for her.
It was a moment of intense prayer. I like a quote “I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go." (Ascribed to Abraham Lincoln). As the time to deliver the baby came, the more intense, frequent and shorter my prayer became. Thank God that everything went well. Prayer turned to be praise.
2. I was the first-hand witness to the pain and sacrifices my wife had to make to deliver the baby. This experience should increase your love and appreciation for your wife.
3. I was there to welcome my son into this world. I could not forget the moment when the first time I saw him. I could not take my eyes off him. I fell in love with him right away. I would strongly recommend that you do not miss this beautiful moment.
Had I stayed outside of the delivery room, I would have left my wife to struggle and face the delivery alone. I would have missed the opportunity to support her when she desperately needed my support and would have failed to welcome my son in this world. I treasure those memories and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
Later when my son grew-up, I had those beautiful memories to share with him. These are beautiful memories that bind and keep a family together.
