Here are my Top Five:
1. When seeking the source of most of our problems, the first place to look is in the mirror. That was the most important lesson I ever learned.
2. Refuse to blame circumstances. It is the choice we just made that put us where we are at this very moment. It is the choice we make next, that will move us forward, or send us careening backward. Or maybe worse: keep us cemented in place.
3. When circumstances seem overwhelming, head for the beach. Circumstances are like the ocean. You can't control the waves; don't even try. Instead, learn how to surf.
4. Remember the Lemmings (http://ow.ly/qF2Fb)... You spent all of high school and maybe college trying to fit in. Now is the time, and I mean right now, to set yourself apart. Being #142 in a group of 200 job applicants does nothing for you. Don't be afraid to throw caution to the wind to see what works. But also, don't be afraid to learn from your mistakes. And if nothing is working, go back to the top of this list, and start over.
5. Cut the dead weight; lose the anchor -- whatever that means to you. And if it does mean something, that something is holding you back. It could be the wrong girlfriend. Or boyfriend. Or wrong group of friends. It could be a bad habit. Or fear. You already know what it is. Do something about it. And if you feel like something is preventing you from doing something about it, go back to the top of this list, and start over.
In all of this, be a good person, and care about others. This doesn't have a number, because, well, you should have learned this in kindergarten, right? (http://ow.ly/qF3Oc)
Learn these five things in your twenties. Or, heck, now if you're past your twenties. Don't ever stop learning, and you have a great shot at a satisfying life as an adult. And if you're already well into adulthood, it's never too late.
